The story of the barbarian warlord who would later be known as Genghis Khan is a deeply fascinating one. It’s the tale of a man who went from being a chieftain’s son in a minor tribe to ruling the greatest empire the world had ever seen at the time. The first part of that tale is retold by Conn Iggulden in this book, and it’s an amazing journey to be brought along on. Unsurprisingly the majority of the story is set in the city of Darien. Darien is a huge city, it has a monarch but he’s little more than a figurehead, the real rulers of the city being the 12 noble families who keep peace with the threat of their own collection of magical artefacts that are rolled out during troubled times. Not to mention obscene amounts of money that can buy their own personal armies. This was a very enjoyable read and I sincerely hope that this series will continue as I’m definitely a fan! And so begins the engrossing story of how Temujin transitions himself into Genghis Khan's and assumes leadership of a disparate people. It was amazing how aware Temujin was of his surroundings and people and how he used strategy, tactics, politics, force and cunning to firstly survive and then unite the Mongol tribes. The greatest battle in his early life was against the Tartars, which his father’s clan, the Wolves, come to participate. After the victory, Temujin and Eeluk fight to resolve old vendettas, leaving Temujin victorious and leader of many of the tribes on the plains.

I’ve been waiting for the master story teller Iggulden to release the sequel to Lion. Yes, at last its here and I’ve read the fabulous book. In this sequel to Lion he continues the story of Pericles and Athens fortunes as a nation. As the Athenian leader much responsibility is borne by Pericles. Though these may now be seemingly peaceful times, Athens can never forget their arch enemy Sparta. Like any other genre, HF has its own pitfalls to avoid. One such pitfall is focus on the period of time to the detriment of the characters. In this story, the author present a well balanced story. As stated above, the reader is firmly grounded in the place and time while at same time, the characters are bold, vibrant and multi-dimensional. The reader is presented with a vivid picture of not only Genghis but his four brothers, his parents (especially his father), his wife and his major enemies. This results in a well rounded story that allow for full immersion. Storytelling is once ore excellent, all figures come superbly to life in this wonderful Greek tragedy of war and death, while political intrigue, cultural and philosophical influences, and military machinations are greatly described within this amazing tale. Its agreta book that will show the differences between Athens and Sparta, in so far what the ruling of the Ancient Greek World is concerned, and that will come to a head when battle King Pleistonax of Sparta will finally come for Athens and its walls. This book follows on from book one, The Lion. Pericles is the lion of Athens, the leader of this great state, and he will do anything to protect his home and reputation. In my opinion, this is a perfect specimen of HF. I enjoyed it and it is easily the best book I have read this year and I anticipate it will make my top 10 at the end of the year. Overall, the story is compelling. While the average reader will have some idea of the sheer force that Genghis Kahn ultimately became, that knowledge is far more amazing when you consider his humble beginnings. A must read. You may not (at first) recognise the author’s name: but readers of Historical Fiction may know of Conn Iggulden, author of nearly 20 fiction books, including the Emperor series set in Ancient Rome, and more recently his War of the Roses series. As if this wasn’t enough, he has also published non-fiction such as The Dangerous Book for Boys (2006).

Conn Iggulden is one of the greatest Historical Fiction authors of our times. Apparently he's damn good at Fantasy as well. TAKE THEM ON A TRIP THIS CHRISTMAS TO VISIT ANCIENT ATHENS AND JOIN PERICLES IN A BATTL FOR SURVIVAL I received an advanced copy of Darien: Empire of Salt via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank C.F. Iggulden, Michael Joseph, and Penguin Random House UK. The first 95% of this book was no exception. It’s a gripping tale of the struggles which Pericles faced, how he became a leader in Athens and his city’s rivalry with Sparta - the most militarily superior state of its time. The opening of this YA novel is a strange one. It is written in a style that brings to mind folklore. There is no immediate hook that jumps out and has only the barest hint of something ‘other’ to appeal to speculative fiction readers. It was not a chapter that particularly hooked me in as an adult reader and it would have left me cold as a teenager as well. It made me wonder whether such a novel would have found publication if it had been written by an unknown, debut author. I do hate that debut authors are required to so completely conform to the splashy requirements publishers set, but at the same time, are those same publishers being too lenient with established voices? Why not push them to do better? I like that they are willing to take risks on other kinds of storytelling, but it is frustrating that these risks only appear to happen with well-known names. A gripping read from the master historical storyteller. This swords-and-sandals epic brings the clash of empires between Greece and Persia to life' DAILY EXPRESS The series is set in Darien and Shiang, two cities in a crumbling empire. The first novel’s events take place in and around Darien, while book two focuses more on the city of Shiang. The final novel brings the characters from these two cities and concludes their stories. I don’t know why the ending to this book series was rushed and so many interesting events cut out… but I hope whatever the new project/time period Conn is embarking on makes it worth it! Currently, he lives in Hertfordshire, England. He is married and is a father of four. He has also written poems and short novels. He has written amazing Book Series such as Conqueror. Emperor, Wars of the Roses and Dangerous Books for Boys. The Gates of Rome
