Description

The surprising horror element was thrown into this equation adroitly. It fits with the entire execution.

It's a fairly clever resolution, though the show-down scene looks at first to be something of a Keystone Cops routine before then turning into the overly-dramatic confrontation scene that Rankin so often insists upon (and so rarely does really convincingly). it's less graphically brutal than i'd anticipated, but more psychologically brutal, an emotionally effective survival story of class divide and the entitled elite driven by the same "some people are disposable" philosophy as The Most Dangerous Game and Good Rich People, but with more monsters at the story's center. Besides being well known from the field, the Golden Arrow is also quite the ladies man. He has no trouble finding romance. Unfortunately for most of the ladies he ends up seeing, things don't usually turn out well. In fact, as time goes by, their experiences get progressively worse ... and gorier. I never saw the ending coming and her ability to make me as a parent think about what it would be like to lose my child was truly terrifying. Any parent will feel their stomach drop when the story unfolds before their eyes!

The adult(s) overseeing us would sit on the porch chatting, napping, drinking, telling us to stop hitting one another This book was not my cup of tea. I feel that however it is a nice break from Alex Cross this was just not a break I needed. Maggie Bradford was a dull character to me, however maybe I just feel that way because I cannot relate to her situation. When Johanna and her family move into her new home, she's sure they've found her forever home. Until she learns about it's dark past: thirty years ago, it was home to three year old Lily Murph, who disappeared during a game of hide-and-seek, and never seen again. Joanna is determined to find out all she can about the little girls disappearance and the inhabitants of the close-knit neighbourhood are all eager to speculate. But the more she learns, the closer she's drawn towards her own dark family secrets - secrets she's spent years trying to hide. I couldn’t work out the solution to the mystery for most of the book, even at that I only deduced part of it! I’m not slipping, it’s just a particularly good mystery! 😅

Thanks to Kids Can Press and NetGalley for the provided e-ARC and the opportunity to read this book. My review is honest, unbiased, and voluntary. #NetGalley #HideAndSeek STREPITOSO! The deceased's girlfriend, Tracy, calls the police and gets in touch with Rebus, warily trying to help, concerned also for her own safety, all the while as much trouble as she is help. Trigger/Content Warnings: murder, blood and gore, suicide, murder of children, loss of parents, loss of a sibling, homelessness, homophobia, sexism, racism, classism, animal death, high-demand religion/cult (mentioned) We follow multiple different perspectives as the contest begins and a Hunger Games-type vibe falls over the narrative.
