Peter Doherty had, for a period in the mid 00s, the kind of fame that made him recognisable even in silhouette. This memoir, dictated but not written by Doherty, follows him from highly intelligent and relatively sheltered boy, to university drop out, to drug addled singer in defining early noughties indie outfit The Libertines. Much of what is known about Doherty comes from sensational headlines grabbed from tabloid newspaper and bombastic interviews where the singer spieled exaggerated stories about his rockstar lifestyle or just blatantly told lies.

Felt like he was trying to set some records straight although as a book about recovery I was saddened to hear that Pete had fallen into using after the Libertines was formed. That would have been useful at least , if Pete feels like this, to say a bit more in that he had the chance to survive this drug abuse but more are those who had no chance. You may think you have heard them all (and plenty more fabricated ones too), but the indie rock star is set to lift the lid on his decade-spanning career with the release of a memoir.

He comes across as very honest and matter of fact when it comes to drug use, and talks candidly about some of the murkier accusations attached to that side of his life. Hard drugs, tiny gigs on the hoof, huge stadium shows, collaborations, obliterations, gangsters and groupies - Doherty has led a life of huge highs and incredible lows. The book is, essentially, a lightly edited transcript of many hours of rambling interviews, and reads like it. I miss something what Keith Richards said in Life ,that he didn’t advice to follow him in the hell of the drugs because his case is somehow unique .But hearing Pete speak now with a calm persona, a rational outlook, and no longer that wandering maelstrom of chaos, it sounds like he's finally figured out who he is and what he wants to be. As a somewhat lonely “army brat” – born in Northumberland but raised in Belfast, Cyprus, Germany, Dorset and Warwickshire – Doherty read Percy Shelley, Oscar Wilde and George Orwell. drugs are mentioned for the first time and then it's all about jailhouse rock and the romanticizing of drugs - the classic sex, drugs and rock 'n roll story. I love the constant references to British film and TV, books and poetry, especially as someone who also lives an imaginary existence. He surrounds himself with amoral, skanky people who he seems to be aware are taking advantage -see "Wolfman" who even Mick Jones of The Clash, (who must've seen some serious skanks in his career) views as unsavoury.
