Description

Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3. Start by choosing a basic type:

Space two feet apart for plants that grow up to three feet at maturity, two to three feet apart for plants up to five feet, and three to five feet apart for those greater than five feet. When the tiny seedlings have developed two sets of true leaves, transplant them into small individual pots. Ideally, you’ll need to take semi-hardwood cuttings. This is the wood that’s still flexible, midway between tender new shoots and mature wood. Vertical Gardens – Vertical Gardening is a great way to take advantage of vertical spaces in and around the garden. Maximise your gardening space by growing gardens vertical!Create a planting hole two to three times the width of the root ball and the same depth as the container it’s currently growing in. conditions. Note: botanical names of azaleas often include ' rhododendron' in the title as they are part of the same genus. Deciduous Azaleas

You can see a selection of our deciduous azaleas in the photographs below this article where we have attempted to show how they actually grow in gardens. Azaleas bring us sparkling colour in spring, then for the rest of the year their contribution to our displays is limited to foliage. But since the 1980s a Louisiana plant breeder has been developing varieties that also bloom in summer and autumn. If your azalea is growing in the right place, you won’t need to worry much about pests and disease problems. Evergreen – Evergreen azaleas keep some of their leaves over winter. These are mostly species from Japan and other parts of Asia. They have several different flower forms. A popular patented evergreen variety is the Encore azalea, which blooms multiple times in a single year. Nothing is more beautiful than an azalea shrub in spring bloom. These easy-care shrubs come in so many colors it’s hard to find one that doesn’t suit your needs. Azaleas can be grown in nearly any garden, instantly adding interest and color to drab areas. Provide winter protection such as a mulch of pine needles or straw or a cloche to protect against frost as needed. Deciduous Azaleas originate from Turkey, America and Asiatic areas such as Japan and Taiwan. The yellow luteum from Turkey is as hardy and as popular as ever with its scented flowers, while the American species are more subtle and extend the flowering season into the summer. The Asiatic species are more delicate in habit and in flower, and all the more beautiful too. Best in partial shade, and perfect at the edge of woodland. Native Trees – Plant deliveries are to Melbourne metro area only. Largely native to Australia, Eucalyptus are yet another example of plant species that is both beautiful in the residental landscape, and practical in the commercial one. Fast growing, with short, fine fibres in the wood make it suitable for fine-grade paper, as well as tissue paper and high quality coated papers. Eucalyptus oil is sought after as an industrial solvent, antiseptic, deodoriser, a natural insect repellant, and in small amounts as a food supplements. The wood is used in the crafting of musical instruments, most notably the Didgeridoo, and most of the rest of any Eucalyptus tree can be used in the making of dyes. All of this is, of course, in addition to the beauty of the foliage and the flowers that make Eucalyptus one of the most recognizable trees in Australia. The azalea leaf miner ( Caloptilia azaleella) is a much more serious pest, and dealing with an infestation may require removal of infected plants. To plant an azalea, dig an area that is a little bit wider than the root ball but not deeper. When you set the roots in the hole, the top of the root ball should be a couple inches (5 cm) higher than soil level. Use a generous amount of mulch to keep moisture in the soil. Best Soil for Azaleas Mix in plenty of organic material such as well-aged compost, leaf mold, or shredded pine bark until the soil mixture is one-third to one-half organic humus. Buddy” Lee crossed ‘Fourth Of July’ with 'Double Beauty', a strong purplish red, hose-in-hose variety from the 1960s, to create Encore Autumn Rouge (‘Conlea’) although this variety is not available in Britain. All the other varieties in the series are descendants of this original cross.
