Description

The clown frogfish, also known as the warty frogfish or clown anglerfish, is a species of anglerfish found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It is characterized by its colorful, mottled pattern, which helps it blend in with its surroundings, and its large, upturned mouth, giving it a frog-like appearance. Unfortunately, the Humphead Wrasse is listed as Endangered by the IUCN due to overfishing for the live reef fish trade and habitat destruction. Sawfish are a rare species of fish characterized by distinctive, saw-life “rostrums” that they use as a weapon and a digging tool. This spring, a 16-foot monstrosity washed up on shore in the Florida Keys. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation biologists estimate the beast weighed 800 to 1,000 pounds—and say it’s the largest sawfish on record. Sawfish are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Scientists could not pinpoint a cause of death for the large sawfish. 2) Angler Catches Rare Mutant Carp This is a rare faintail mirror carp. Connecticut DEEP via Facebook The sarcastic fringehead is a small, aggressive fish found in the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, from California to Baja California. It has a large, extensible mouth, which it uses in territorial displays and fights with other fringeheads.

In its native habitat, the blobfish looks almost normal; only when brought to the surface – where there is substantially less pressure – does the fish begin to look “blobby”. Discover More With Active Wild Like all piranhas, the red-bellied piranha is a squat, powerful fish, armed with a mouthful of sharp teeth. The species is an omnivore, eating plants as well as a variety of small to medium-sized animals, including fish, worms, and even mammals and birds. Sunfish ( Mola Mola) is a strange and unusual-looking fish. It is disc-shaped and can crow to lengths of 4.5 metres (15ft) and weigh thousands of pounds, making sunfish the heaviest bony fish in the world. Sunfish were previously very rare in UK waters, being found in tropical and sub-tropical species, but possibly as a result of warming seas, they appear to be becoming more common around the British Isles.Riftia pachyptila, commonly known as the giant tube worm, is a deep-sea worm found near hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean. It has a symbiotic relationship with bacteria living inside its body, which convert chemicals from the vent fluids into energy through a process called chemosynthesis. Here, they wait for potential prey to pass them by, a menu which for the wobbegong includes fish, lobsters, octopuses and crabs. Its name is thought to come from an Australian Aborigine language meaning ‘shaggy beard’ – which makes a lot of sense. 5. Christmas tree worm Despite its name, the vampire squid isn’t actually a squid, or an octopus. It’s also not a vampire, for reasons which should be pretty obvious. In fact, they’re pretty placid considering their scary-sounding name. Your specialist can refer you to a dietitian for advice. They'll help you make sure your diet still contains all the nutrients you need. Other things you can do The species is found in the waters of Ambon Island, and other Indonesian islands. It belongs to the frogfish family Antennariidae, all of which are predatory anglerfish

Pilot fish are not completely unheard of around the British Isles. There are unconfirmed reports that these fish have occasionally washed up dead on beaches in England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland. However, they are very much seen as a vagrant species which, for unknown reasons, have travelled from their warm water habitat and ended up disorientated on lost around the coast of Britain. It is also possible that pilot fish can survive around the UK when the sea temperature is high but will die when the temperature drops. The UK shore caught record for this species was set in 1997 at the Towy Estuary, Carmarthenshire, Wales when Mr J. Richards caught a pilot fish of just over 10oz. PufferfishThe Red-Lipped Batfish is a species of fish found in deep waters around the Galapagos Islands and off the coast of Peru. It belongs to the family Ogcocephalidae, which also includes other batfish species. The species can grow up to 1.2 meters in length and can weigh up to 20 kilograms. It is a popular target for recreational fishermen, and is also commercially harvested for food. Despite this, the Blue Parrotfish is considered Least Concern by the IUCN, as it is relatively widespread and not significantly threatened by overfishing. Discover More With Active Wild Shortly following the lancetfish, another typically deep-sea dwelling fish washed up on a southern California beach. This time it was a Pacific footballfish—a species of anglerfish—that washed ashore near San Diego. Anglerfish typically live 1,000 to 4,000 feet below the surface, where there’s little to no light, and they use bioluminescent lights on the top of their head to lure in fish—and then chomp on them. This footballfish was only the second ever Pacific footballfish to be found in the San Diego area. 10) An Arapaima Invades Florida Arapaima can grow to more than 10 feet in length and 400 pounds. Dawn Hull Sea angels are found in cold and temperate waters worldwide. They are predatory, primarily feeding on sea butterflies, which are another group of small, pelagic gastropods.

Like other frogfish, the clown frogfish is an ambush predator, using a modified dorsal spine as a lure to attract unsuspecting prey. Its ability to change color and texture allows it to camouflage itself among coral reefs, sponges, and other marine environments. The Atlantic Wolffish is valued for its meat, which is considered a delicacy in some parts of the world. The fish is considered a vulnerable species due to overfishing and habitat destruction, and is now protected in many areas. Discover More With Active Wild The Candiru is typically less than 10 cm in length and is generally a gray-brown color, with a flattened head and body. Discover More With Active Wild

Sea angels are a group of small, gelatinous marine sea slugs characterized by translucent, wing-like appendages, which they use to “fly” through the water. The Frilled Shark is a weird deep-sea shark found in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, typically at depths of up to 1500 meters. It has a distinctive appearance, with a long, eel-like body and a “frilly”, or ruffled, appearance around its gill slits. Sadly, this huge fish is endangered due to threats from fishing, bycatch, and habitat degradation, as well as its slow reproductive rate and late sexual maturity. Discover More with Active Wild
