Posts are for general information, are not intended to substitute for informed professional advice (medical, legal, veterinary, financial, etc. After refilling the windscreen washer reservoir last weekend my car's bonnet refused to close and I've found out via Google that the catch is at fault and it is easily removed for cleaning/replacement. This is a common problem with Mk 5 Golf's and if it seizes up completely you can have real difficulty either getting your bonnet open, or closing it afterwards. I got the impression that VW had designed things so in an emergency you could reach the latch bolts with minimal damage to the grille, in a service or maintenance environment you would pop the bonnet and remove the grille to reach them. It's worth trying to lubricate it and open and close it a load of times but 99/100 it's been done before and the catech is f ked.

If anyone with a Mk V finds their car's bonnet release lever hard to operate, don't wait and end up breaking the release lever. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item.

If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. Obviously, the previously removed grommet will then no longer fit the hole, but the hole is obscured from casual sight by its location within the top slat of the grille. Due to the lock normally being accessed when the bonnet being open there is no other way to remove it without causing minor damage to the grill.

There are two long ones holding the main part of the unit itself and a short one that holds the catch bar in place on the car. So, if that procedure fails, you will need to remove the bonnet catch without being able to remove the front grille. In theory you should be able to just pull the lead out of these clips but I found this a bit tricky and so instead, just pushed the clips off the bodywork with a screwdriver. Unfortunately the car battery is now flat and we cant get the bonnet opened to jump start it or replace it. Then went through the open/close process (wihtout actually closing the bonnet) many times (approx 20).

I've read several how-to guides on the net (including the excellent one on this thread) but none of them go into much detail about this bit so I'm assuming I'm doing something horribly wrong! The parts department in the local VW garage weren't answering their phones so will have to try them again tomorrow.Just bought a 2004 MK5 Golf and when the seller tried to open the bonnet, it opened first time however he tried to close it and it wouldn't close.
