They are all survivors of a private space-shot that went horribly wrong when Cosmic Rays penetrated their ship’s inadequate shielding and mutated them all. I like the idea that Reed is so scientific to classify Galactus as beyond mere good or evil, but I have a bit of difficulty in how he seems able to use that to get away from the rather real harm that Galactus does. And like the Fantastic Four, they continually strove to overcome the impossible and achieve the extraordinary. Of course, he’s never wrong, and – as explored earlier – even when he is wrong, there aren’t generally too many consequences. Byrne greatly expands the creative usage of her force field powers, and in general gives her a more prominent role in the team's adventures.

It’s easy for the two to become tangled in the public mind – and many would argue that it’s actually proper that they do. Richards’ body became elastic, Sue gained the power to turn invisible, Johnny Storm could turn into living flame and tragic Ben turned into a shambling, rocky freak. Even after his run ended, I kept reading because he made the FF feel like a family, and I genuinely cared about all of them. The team-ups are fine – indeed the MTU one, with a Chris Claremont script, is rather good – but the earlier FF stories show how much a shake-up was necessary. I know they’re bad guys, but the team traditionally uses some measure of care not to fatally wound human villains. This is a fine, as new, hardcover first edition, first printing copy in a fine, as new DJ, black spine. menaced New York before being soundly outsmarted, after which one last Lee Foreword precedes another cross-pollination: this time guest-starring Nick Fury, lead character in Marvel’s only war comic. The earliest stories are a bit too heavy on monsters and aliens, a carry-over from the pre-Marvel Atlas comics days.

His run can be a little uneven and overly quirky for some readers, but I had a heck of a time with it.

Of course, it goes without saying that, as far back as the very first issue, Reed has been a slightly “ambiguous” figure (note the way Kirby introduced him), but here he seems quite worryingly disconnected from the implications of his actions. An old ghost has come back to haunt us, and we must exorcise it before this tragedy can achieve its full potential! If you want to see them go against Skrulls, Doom, Terrax, and some other fun bad guys, pick this up! A worrying amount of Byrne’s stories feature Reed offering justification for violence by his team mates.
