It’s the consequence of caring so much for aesthetic to true musical inspiration is cast so far aside, it’s barely on the board anymore. In the last eight years, they’ve released just two albums to date, Unicorn marking their third album and, unsurprisingly, it’s just as jam-packed with features from across the musical spectrum as ever. It’s not just her voice though, that propels the song but the appearance of some downright glorious saxophone midway through for a, dare we say it, sexy solo. It makes a strong start with ‘Monster In Paradise’, a cinematic sprawl of pounding 80s pop beats and melodies.

British masters of futuristic dark retrowave/synthrock with the next mighty release, driving, nuanced and catchy as it should be. One of the potential downfalls of this genre is how it is often a rose-colored look at the past by nearly constantly invoking nostalgia. On their self-titled debut one of the songs that stood out for everyone was the nuclear powered “Tech Noir” which featured an introduction by none other than god of synth soundtracks, John Carpenter. GUNSHIP is an entity that has, since the first moment that I heard them, continually captured my imagination through their songs, aesthetic, and ability to be unique amidst a host of synthwave acts that rely too heavily on a single aspect of this burgeoning scene. One of the clever ways that this is accomplished is of course is using their impressive guest list – who are very often fixtures from the past – to embrace what the future holds. If that’s the intent, then obviously Unicorn is a roaring success, but empty-calorie nostalgia-baiting with nothing beneath the shiny, neon veneer is obviously not a good outcome.

It’s one of the reasons why Unicorn’s last leg is such a drag, where Westaway’s use as a functional mouthpiece just doesn’t gel with the overall intentions. My favorites right now are Tech Noir II (a more upbeat sequel to the original), Empress Of The Damned (there's a lot going on in this song and it has a lot of energy and attitude) and Ghost (the music video is absolutely hypnotizing). Tech Noir 2 by itself is a master-class in how to take a known and beloved quantity and somehow against all odds, improve upon it in every conceivable way while SOMEHOW retaining all of the originals DNA.Granted, there’s not a ton that comes from that, seeing as most don’t get to show much of themselves off, instead falling into Gunship’s maw to be spat out as a nominal vocaloid fit for purpose.
