What I did notice is that by default the laptop comes with an SSD in the right slot, and has an extra free M.2 slot that goes over the wifi module. Adding an additional SSD in that second slot impacted the wifi speeds in some way, causing them to drop to only 100-150 Mpbs at 6-10 meters away from the router, where the default configuration with the single right SSD worked at 300++ Mbps. The reason I tested this was that it was pointed out by a reader in the comments section of the Zephyrus M16 review, and I was curious whether this was an isolated issue. Looks like it might not be and I’m waiting for an update from Asus on this matter, as they were working on reproducing it on their units. My only complaint is the fact that the lowest-brightness setting isn’t that dim, and that might bother some of you when using the laptop in a pitch-dark room. Regardless, the arm-rest, WASD and arrows keys remain within comfortable levels at sub-40s in all conditions, so this laptop is never going to feel too hot to the touch, despite implementing a heat-conductive metal chassis.

The ROG Zephyrus M16 is an interesting option in the portable space, while the full-size space offers many competitive alternatives with faster CPUs and graphics and cooler-running internals. For connectivity, there’s Wireless 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 through a Mediatek chip on this unit, the same offered on other AMD 6000 ROG laptops. It performed well on this unit, and I see no reason why I’d want to exchange that for something else – that’s nonetheless possible if you want to, the M.2 format wifi module is hidden under the main SSD drive. I am a fan of this particular laptop (2022 Asus X16 RTX 3060) and even bought two for my family. While Armoury Crate has been fine for me, some strongly dislike it. Fortunately, there is an alternative in a third-party app named G-Helper which is a lightweight replacement. Overall, though, one of the significant advantages of the Flow X16 is the lower noise levels offered by its more advanced thermal module in comparison to the clamshell ROG Zephyrus designs, which we’ll discuss further down. Furthermore, when opting for a mini LED configuration of this laptop, you must understand that the mini LED panel takes a toll on battery life, so this won’t be able to last as long on a charge as a configuration with an IPS display. For the GPU, this series is available with RTX 3000 Ti graphics chips. What we have on this sample is the mid-tier RTX 3060 running at up to 125W in supported games and applications, with Dynamic Boost. RTX 3050Ti and 3070Ti variants are also available. For reference, something like a ROG Zephyrus M16 is going to perform up to 20% faster in the CPU loads, with rather similar GPU results. I haven’t reviewed the RTX 3060 version of the M16, though, for a proper comparison. And then there’s also the more portable and more affordable ROG Zephyrus G14, which actually outmatches this mid-tier Flow X16, especially in GPU performance, but at a slightly higher price. This Flow X16 should also be a close match for the AMD-based ROG Zephyrus G15, but we haven’t properly tested that one in the 2022 edition.
