The head is also exclusive, although pleasingly resembles the design from 75288 AT-AT. This dark bluish grey kepi remains unchanged from past minifigures though, featuring the standard identification disc. However, dual-moulded boots are missing which is somewhat disappointing because they have appeared previously, with 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer. This minifigure is equipped with a blaster pistol. As mentioned in the introduction, into LEGO Star Wars’ third decade, 75296 Darth Vader Meditation Chamber remarkably manages to offer something new to build from the original trilogy. It is a complicated, moving structure that story-wise arguably serves very little purpose, but develops Darth Vader’s character both visually (this is our first, gruesome glimpse at his scars) and tonally (socially-distanced force choking), and so as a setting is rather memorable. General Veers has accompanied four different AT-AT models since 2007, wearing his combat armour on each occasion. This version instead features the uniform more regularly associated with Imperial Officers, displaying an accurate rank indicator and a single code cylinder. Several similar minifigures have been produced previously, but this torso is unique.

These comprise big, structurally complex sets that challenge the builder’s cognitive ability, containing hundreds of pieces to represent vehicles (such as cars and trains), buildings (such as recognisable landmarks and simple houses), and objects (such as flower bouquets, bonsai trees, and fish tanks). It’s geared towards adults as a display piece. The squad are base is inevitable. Last year they gave Bespin and the Nebulon B rectangular bases, all the UCS vehicles have bases, Yoda’s lightsaber has a base. If this didn’t, people would complain that it doesn’t match the style of all the other adult-targeted sets. Upon closing the chamber, gaps evidently remain. These are quite conspicuous, identified by the white elements inside, but appear less problematic than I had anticipated. In fact, I expect this model would seem remarkably bland without these white highlights, authentic though their concealment would be. Regardless, I prefer to display the meditation chamber open. Darth Vader comes with printed arms and a starch fabric cape – a combination only seen before in 75294 Bespin Duel (he came with printed arms but the softer spongey cape in 75291 Death Star Final Duel). The printed arms add so much to the minifigure design, particularly for this set where he is sat front and centre with those arms stretched out in front of him. It’s perhaps an issue reflective of meeting the design criteria to otherwise come in as close to minifigure scale as possible. Within the parts selection available to the LEGO Star Wars design team, this was the best solution available. They could perhaps have moulded a new piece, but that would have upped the budget as it’s not likely to be a piece re-useable elsewhere in the company, or they could have built a fully-closable chamber at a larger scale, but that would leave you with a redundant pair of minifigures, when as characters their interaction in and around the chamber is part of what makes it so interesting as a setting. With that being said, will more LEGO Star Wars sets be added to the retirement list? Which ones do you think will be retired next? As a display piece this set comes in at a decent size and looks fantastic, and as a LEGO set it surprises with how much the simple aspects of being able to swivel Darth Vader in his chair and lift and raise the top half of the chamber are a delight. It’s the sort of set that is noteworthy for any number of reasons, from those just mentioned to the fact we’re not likely to see this in LEGO form again anytime soon, and for how it just starts the imagination going on what other small scenes and environments might translate into similar LEGO Star Wars display pieces. For those who are contemplating the best ways to display their new LEGO sets, it is advised that you think outside of the box. Some of the products offered by the brand are not only hard to build but also problematic to house, reaching sizes that are beyond the capacity of a regular cabinet or shelf. This means that creativity is rewarded, and you may have to invest in custom furnishings, ideally with a glass screen for protection from dust and other environmental hazards, to accommodate the biggest LEGO sets in your collection, such as the famously large Titanic. 75296

There are currently twenty-two retiring Star Wars LEGO sets which include Yoda (75255), Darth Vader Meditation Chamber (75296), Resistance X-Wing (75297), Scout Trooper Helmet (75305), Duel on Mandalore (75310), Boba Fett’s Starship (75312), and The Armorer’s Mandalorian Forge (75319). From just the ones mentioned above, we have quite a handful of sets that are from or based on the Disney Plus series’ The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. I find that surprising as well. You may be surprised by which LEGO Star Wars sets are retiring this year! LEGO has produced two previous renditions of Darth Vader's meditation chamber, appearing inside 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer and 75251 Darth Vader's Castle. However, those designs have replicated basic features of the source material while this example achieves an accurate scale beside minifigures, measuring 16cm across and nearly 16cm deep. This compromise is excusable though because integrating the correct number would require a larger size, exceeding minifigure-scale. However, I am disappointed that the crane for removing Darth Vader's helmet is missing.
