They hope to be rescued by a British ship, or at least one that will take them to somewhere like Singapore or Hong Kong. Meanwhile El discovers her father’s mobile phone and some strange text messages in an apparent code. It’s essentially character-driven, and the author clearly has tremendous empathy, able to get under the skins of a variety of different folk. Some readers did not like how little conflict there was in the novel, and just seems to be about people having a good time with everything that they do.

She only started her career as a novelist aged 50, having previously worked as a ballet dancer and teacher. In any case, this is the September term, and Darrell is firm friends with Sally, who travels down to the school (in Cornwall) with her. Nestled in the Devon countryside, the Keep has always been a refuge for the Chadwick family: forever warm and welcoming through the challenges life has thrown at them.
