Werewolves can be potent metaphors, as films like The Company of Wolves have demonstrated, and Dog Soldiers isn’t shy about its parallels to the Vietnam War. Oh, The Descent might be a better horror film, indeed one of the best horror films of all time, but, in terms of all round satisfaction, Dog Soldiers is the one to beat.

Its a part of that little horror subgenre where you put a group of mercernaries/military unit against some sort of paranormal antagonist. No shirtless underwear models lusting after teenage girls here, just a bunch of normal guys desperately trying to survive the night. In many respects it’s an ‘old fashioned’ film, and that is no bad thing, using characters and narrative as the story unfolds, with a few twists and complexities on the way. A History of Lycanthropy is an interview with author Gavin Baddeley, who collaborated on the FrightFest Guide to Werewolf Movies with Marshall. Dog Soldiers is out on Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and Limited Edition 4K UHD/Blu-ray on 22nd August from Second Sight.

There are no less than three different audio commentaries on offer: one with Neil Marshall, another with the producers David E. It sounds a bit cheesy but you really get a sense that the soldiers were a brotherhood and that makes what happens to them all the more tragic to watch. Dog Soldiers also has an enormous sweeping score by Mark Thomas that pushes it up a level, so once the idle chat disappears, the ghost stories and looming risks make up for that early stuff as well as a great jump scare. Dog Soldires is one of my favourite werewolf movies, I just love how it doesn't take all that much to create a successfully suspensful action horror that even has a twist thrown in (as if it wasn't so great already). They encounter a zoologist named Megan (Emma Cleasby) who takes them to a little house in the woods, where they try to treat their wounded and take shelter from the mysterious attackers. It’s still miles away from the completely incoherent visual anarchy of a Michael Bay film, but Marshall’s confidence in handling action scenes has improved considerably since he made his feature debut with this film. One thing that really surprised me this time around was just how beautifully epic Mark Thomas' score is. Fans of the film should easily lean toward this upgrade for the most definitive version of the movie to date.
