Tether's End has languished in my book collection for over a decade. In some ways this is better than Tiger in the smoke as there is no Canon Avril to muddle things up and the suspense builds up and the reader is hooked till the end,the line is taut all along.But the london smog and the image of the band of ex army men has their own presence in that book that made up for Avril. Here the london atmosphere is not so well built but the characters of Mrs. Tassie and Gerry Hawker are wonderfully done.

There are three (three!) characters who contribute most to the crimes' end. We start with Richard Waterfield, who indeed is ringside for much of the book's action. But he's such a two-dimensional stuffed shirt, I found him hard to latch onto. Also, we have Poppy Tassie (OMG that name), a motherly soul who may be both victim and enabler (abettor) whose emotional conflict does provide some much-needed tension to the story. Simultaneosly, we have the perp. He even provides police with some of the most damning evidence of his activities. It is a study of what we readers now easily recognize as the sociopathic serial killer. This is not a spoiler - the real question here is not whodunit, but how and if he'll be caught and what characters might he kill before book's end?
