Description

This third in a series of holiday books is a sweet story about the true meaning of Mother's Day, highlighted by Brett's lush pictures.

Das ist beim vorliegenden Band zwar leider auch nicht anders, doch sind es großformatige Zeichnungen, welche in eine geheimnisvolle Welt entführen. The gargoyles squat / high on corners / staring into space, their empty eyes unblinking / till night comes. After reading through the book, which was also illustrated by David Weisner, the author of award winning books such as Tuesday(1992) I was pleasantly surprised to find a creepy and somewhat humorous book. When Jake wakes up at midnight, strange shapes loom large and frightening sounds are everywhere, but the reassuring appearance of his parents sets everything right. A prime example of this blend can be seen when a gargoyle is shown with dozens of pigeons perched upon him and leaving their "mottled stains".Four sneakered feet, two large and two small, tiptoe through a house chock-full of otherworldly creatures--a vampire, ghosts and a mummy, among others--in Bunting's second Halloween excursion. Wiesner creates his characters and scenery in the book through charcoal shading; this medium really helps to show the mysteriousness of the gargoyles and the talent Wiesner possesses as an artist. What a fun tale for all ages, highlighted by Wiesner's moonlit illustrations done in fifty shades of mottled grey. I appreciate the illustrator's use of black and white illustrations as I believe it sets the mood for the whole story. As promised on my Facebook page I wanted to share with you some teaching ideas for using the fantastic picture book ‘The Night of the Gargoyles’ written by Eve Bunting and illustrated by David Weisner.

The gargoyles' impish, grotesque grins-expressions just this side of malevolent-and ``empty eyes unblinking'' are not easily forgotten. The story does not leave much to the imagination as far as endings go, but the outstanding use of poetic phrasing keeps you entranced throughout the story. The collaborators who brought us The Mother's Day Mice and Scary, Scary Halloween are in excellent form in this fun, frothy celebration. On the first night of Hanukkah every year, Grandma recites her experience as a 12-year-old in Buchenwald, when she risked her life to steal a potato and margarine to improvise one Hanukkah light.
