Description

The more practice questions you do, the more chance you have of scoring a higher score, it’s that simple. Within the 86 questions, there are two types of questions, making up roughly half of the questions each. The question types are: Extended Matching Questions The scores for each paper are also banded (1 – 4), with a band one indicating that the minimum threshold has not been met. If you achieve a band one in either of the papers, you will not be able to progress with your application. However, if you are unsuccessful in achieving the acceptable standard, it is possible to resit the MSRA within a different assessment window, as long as it’s within the same recruitment year. If you achieve a passable score (bands 2-4), you will not be able to resit the MSRA within the same recruitment year. How to prepare for the MSRA / MSRA Exam Preparation We mentioned it already, but remember the papers are not negatively marked, so answering a question will always be better than leaving it blank. You may also find it helpful to revisit the following documents, given their influence on the MSRA exam, as mentioned previously:

Every time you answer a question in the Medibuddy MSRA question bank you will be shown if your answer is correct or incorrect, with a detailed explanation, which is a really useful tool for your revision. The question bank is adaptive, which means you get a personalised learning experience, so every question you answer has been selected specifically for you to improve your score. It does not test knowledge or problem-solving. Instead, the content relates to the GMC’s Generic Professional Capabilities framework and tests attributes that are important for doctors’ training progression and job performance. The three main competencies tested are professional integrity, coping with pressure and empathy and sensitivity. 1 Knowledge of specialty training is not needed but a general understanding of primary and secondary care work is expected. Questions are set in the context of the UK Foundation Programme; candidates assume the role of F2 doctors. However, to make certain the fairness of the MSRA for all candidates including International Medical Graduates, questions do not entail any knowledge of policies or procedures that are specific to the UK. 1 There is no charge for the assessment; however, you may incur travel and accommodation costs, which will not be reimbursed, so it’s advised that you book your assessment as soon as possible to avoid missing out on your closest test centre. MSRA Revision

Our super smart question bank adapts to YOU, providing all the benefits of personalised learning at a fraction of the cost of a course. We’re really excited about it (I’m sure you can tell!) and probably a bit biased, but we think it’s the best way to prepare for the MSRA in 2024! MSRA Tips As well as focusing on high-quality content, much work is put into producing innovative features such as customized revision study notes and an updated continuous histogram to compare your achievement to other applicants. The Professional Dilemmas section is limited to 95 minutes and is a ranking test, consisting of 50 scenarios. For each situation presented, the candidate will have to rate the appropriateness of 4-5 independent actions (from 1=most to 5=least appropriate).

Additionally, the scores for each paper are banded 1 to 4. Band 1 means that the minimum score has not been achieved. Candidates who score band 1 in either, or both, papers are unable to proceed with their applications. I had been allowed to take an online sitting for health reasons and so proceeded to sit the most unusual exam I have ever sat! The clinical questions are obviously fairly rapid fire so it felt hard to tell how they were going. The professional dilemmas all felt more vague compared to a lot of my practise but at least I felt I had a way of approaching them. Then, to make matters worse, the postman spent 15 minutes banging on my door and window and jumping up and down to get my attention which almost completely threw me and so I finished the exam convinced I had failed! Ruby is 2 years old and is seen today with her father as she has had a one-week history of runny nose and has complained her throat hurts. This morning she has noted a rash on both cheeks but nowhere else on the body. Ruby is well in herself and eating, drinking, passing urine and opening her bowels as normal. She has no other medical history and is up to date with immunisations. She is not lethargic and on examination today is playing happily in the consulting room, has normal observations and an unremarkable respiratory and throat examination. There is a diffuse erythematous rash on both cheeks. What is her most likely diagnosis? I had naively assumed that my medical school strategy of doing my best at learning everything would continue to serve me well for the MSRA and maybe it would had I had more time, however once I had dug out folder after folder and a giant pile of textbooks not only did I feel completely overwhelmed but it was also clear that there was no way I could work through such a volume with less than two months and three small children to look after! A new strategy was needed urgently and I searched the internet and read review after review of the MSRA online question banks! You are a FY2 Doctor on an orthopaedic ward. Your team have just seen an elderly Spanish man on the busy ward round who understands limited English. Your registrar has gained written consent from him for a hip operation scheduled for 2 days’ time. One of the nurses quietly says to you that she suspects the patient was just nodding politely and understood very little. She says she does not want to undermine the registrar. You know his daughter visits daily and always translates if she is present. Is the MSRA exam difficult? Strategy: Learn how to approach the professional dilemmas questions – this was a real game-changer for me

The Clinical Problem Solving Paper includes 12 different clinical topic areas (below). The domains all focus around one of the following: investigations, diagnosis, emergencies, prescribing or management. Particular specialties which are often dominant are Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Clinical Problem Solving Topics: Focus on one speciality at a time: you will probably initially feel overwhelmed at the thought of having to go through all of your medicine/surgery/paediatrics/psychiatry notes again – but you will surprise yourself with how much you remember when doing the questions first. This will highlight your stronger and weaker areas. Then, spend time focused on your weakest specialties one at a time – this will help you consolidate your knowledge by regular repetition and your scores will soon improve. Both elements of the exam are based on the Foundation Programme curriculum and are designed to assess how you apply your clinical knowledge to support you to make clinical decisions. How Many Questions in the MSRA? MSRA Paper At a moment when being a junior resident is growing increasingly expensive (think GMC, PMETB, Royal College examination fees), Passmedicine is assigned offering a quality revision study resource at the lowest price to yourself as feasible. This is, in part, achieved by relying on word-of-mouth recommendations rather than funding costly promoting campaigns. If you find Passmedicine valuable, tell a colleague! Assesses your ability to apply clinical knowledge to help make clinical decisions – it is not a test of pure knowledge.Having gone through the process feeling under a lot of pressure for a few reasons, I think my advice to those preparing for the exam, especially those with children and slightly more difficult revision circumstances would be: You will be given a set of responses (usually between 7 – 10) and asked to select the most appropriate option for multiple, individual scenarios. Each of the responses may be used once, more than once or not at all when selecting a suitable option for each scenario. All applicants to GP specialty training are required to sit the MSRA. Candidates who do not achieve the minimum score required for GP specialty training must resit. 2 A successful outcome from the previous recruitment year cannot be transferred.
