It featured 23 of the songs written by Heaton throughout his career in the Housemartins, The Beautiful South, his solo years, and his collaboration with Jacqui Abbott. Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings]. For the people who came, particularly the care workers in Sheffield, it just had this massive release. If we did Bring Me Sunshine people would be disappointed if we didn’t dress up as Eric and Ernie and do the dance. On 11 November 2014, BBC Radio 2 broadcast a world premiere of "Real Hope", featuring the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, from the deluxe edition of What Have We Become? After a childhood in Sheffield, Heaton moved to Chipstead, Surrey during his adolescent years, an early life Heaton described as "bred in Sheffield, fed in Surrey". Jacqui, the words to Don’t Marry Her are quite racy for a pop song and When I Get Back to Blighty seem to celebrate the early death of Phil Collins. Baby It’s Cold Inside may derive its title from the rather problematic Christmas song from the 1940s but is actually an incisive takedown of sexual predators and serial harassers.

I’m not going to compromise if someone asks me about something, but I don’t ram it down people’s throats. When I started writing I listened to complicated people like Elvis Costello, and maybe Smokey Robinson or Bill Withers in terms of love songs. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. On an interview with BBC Breakfast in July 2008, Heaton clarified this by saying that the Beautiful South had made similar-sounding albums for the past ten years. It is the fifth UK number-one album for both overall, including their three number-one albums as part of the Beautiful South.

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott: NK-Pop album review — a jolly

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott have announced details of a new album and shared a moving single, ‘Still’. We were quite a weird set of people and that was the first gig we played where we didn’t smash our gear up, so three of us rolled an enormous, 10ft wheel on stage during Pere Ubu’s set. Paul is a witty, contentious and sometimes abrasive lyricist, but do you ever think he goes too far ? The previous Waits Under Review led us to a jumping-off point of such excitement that part two couldn’t come fast enough. He especially loves the way she doesn’t tell the truth about hers – he finds that shyness quite endearing. He’s mastered the trick over his career, whether it be with The Beautiful South or, more recently, with his musical foil Jacqui Abbott, with whom N. K. Pop wouldn’t be a Heaton/Abbott album without some politics – the final track His Master’s Game is a timely number about government playing divide and rule, while Sunny Side Up employs a rockabilly riff to remind us that “the only real democracy sees the Eton mob in jail”. I smoked for 15 years then got bored of it, but gradually I had to scrap the list because I didn’t want to die.

In narrative songs like The Good Times, how much of the story is mapped out in advance before you put pen to paper? There’s things that have been sung jokingly in rehearsals that we’d never perform in public, though [laughs]. It takes in regret-filled pub landlords (The Good Times), self-destructive masculinity (I Drove Her Away With My Tears, Baby It’s Cold Inside), mismatched romance (Who Built The Pyramids? K. Pop that stand squarely alongside some of Heaton’s best – he may have celebrated his 60th birthday earlier this year, but that famous fire of his shows no sign of being extinguished.

Paul Heaton + Jacqui Abbott - N.K-Pop Lyrics and Tracklist

They released a statement on 31 January, in which their reasons for splitting were "musical similarities". Lines like “still feel your heartbeat, the tiniest drop…your departure destroyed us but we’re so glad you could come” are stark, poignant and affecting. During the 1990s, Heaton regularly appeared on Football Italia, Channel 4's coverage of Italian Serie A football as a pre-match guest and was frequently introduced by host James Richardson as an 'Italian football expert'. My life is a soundtrack, i track my life through music, photography is my passion, my escape, my expression.

The singers for the original piece were: Wayne Gidden, Aaron Wright, King Creosote, Simon Aldred, Cherry Ghost, Jacqui Abbott, Yvonne Shelton and Mike Greaves. While living in Sheffield, Heaton became interested in football, and while his elder brothers elected to watch Sheffield Wednesday, Heaton chose to support Sheffield United. Mrs H is also a touchstone in the melodic, love-hate face-off with Abbott on Too Much For One (Not Enough For Two), on which the singers dissect the pitfalls of domesticity with the sweet soul chemistry of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.
