Originally its jurisdiction lay in four areas: disputes about 'neighbourhood', a concept which included disputes between neighbours over encroachments and public nuisances; civil actions, mainly of a commercial nature; weights and measures; and infringements of the monopoly trading privileges of the burgesses and guild brethren. I bought this book because it's by George MacDonald, and I'm a George MacDonald fan, and this book is almost never found elsewhere. Even Mark Twain, who initially disliked MacDonald, became friends with him, and there is some evidence that Twain was influenced by MacDonald.
