You'll hear a slightly brighter and more optimistic song than the A-side, but it's still deeply morunful, with Greg Gonzalez singing of the faded memories of cut ties, sunscreen and summer dresses. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric. The only issue is an added layer of bubble wrap would have reduced my anxiety when I opened the package. Syrupy, sensual, subterranean dream-pop is set against vocals from bandleader Greg Gonzalez that walk the subtle line between croon and whisper. stars out of 5 -- "Band leader Greg Gonzalez's languid dream pop bleeds into one beautiful, fuzzy-headed whole.

As the band name suggests, this eponymous album of haunting 'Dream pop' certainly touches upon the sedate inertia of post coital contentment. On album opener 'K', a tale of blossoming love etched in tiny details luxuriates over chiming guitars; on the hymn to romantic compulsion of 'Each Time You Fall in Love', the suspended animation of Angelo Badalamenti's heart-stopping Twin Peaks music is echoed. Recorded and finessed by Gonzalez himself during sessions in the middle of the night in Spain, it’s another suite of meditations on intimacy and heartbreak. But it's all good stuff really, its soothing sameness likely to provide a comfort blanket in THOSE moments rather than becoming a bore chore like say the second XX album. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.Never breaking into a sweat, the band float along on a cushion of chiming guitar arpeggios and supply just the right amount of ambience as all the while a constant tambourine echoes through the tracks from start to finish. And, just as every good film-maker knows the need for a killer finale, so Gonzalez closes the album with the retro-romantic swing and teasingly filthy put-downs (the “sucking cock” lyric isn’t as barbed as it seems, just friendly joshing) of ‘Young and Dumb’, which brings the album to a close with good, timeless advice: “Drive your car to the beach with the song on repeat…”. To mirror their woozy romanticism in music, Gonzalez rejected conventional studio routes for his band, which numbers Randy Miller on bass, Jacob Tomsky on drums and Phillip Tubbs on keyboards. Cigarettes After Sex frontman Greg Gonzalez's ability to set a scene and sustain a mood reels you in deeply. After the phenomenal online break-out success of Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby, from the band’s debut EP 1, the Brooklyn transplant (originally from El Paso) wanted to project his worldview on to a bigger screen, a broader canvas. As the band’s name suggests, it’s reminiscent of lying in bed, but its ambient qualities don’t prevent it from being music you can dance to. The thing I like the most is that this sounds like chill out, love music but listen a little closer. The influxes of the 90s indie pop sound looms large over the record as objects such as anime porn come and go.

Promising more blissful, narcoleptic dream-pop after the success of his early singles, Greg Gonzalez delivers his second Cigarettes After Sex album, Cry. No regrets, though, as Greg Gonzalez muses on sensuality, the loss of those we care about, the loss of self to another and the endless yearning of the human heart. Packed with an exquisite, opiate balladry at once heartfelt and heartbroken, it's hard to tell whether this is exactly what you need to hear when living through your blue period or precisely what you shouldn't listen to.Gonzalez has that low, husky Sandoval / Legrand/ Timmins vocal affectation so far down pat that it's small wonder his androgynous tones have puzzled many a first time listener. The exception is 'Each Time You Fall in Love', which was recorded in the Beekman's stairway after hours, the ghosts of screen lovers channelled in every warm note. Bubblegum” and “Stop Waiting” are the latest pair of singles from Cigarettes After Sex, and their first new music of 2023. Review: With the combination of band name and album title this one's always going to be a bit of a tearjerker, packed with self-reflection and self-loathing.
