Description

The platform itself has a built-in intervalometer, so if your DSLR doesn’t have one built in you can just attach it to the camera mount. Around 60-second exposures are achievable using a 100mm lens, though a counterweight is available that ups the load limit to 3kg. The images are very good, and we are impressed with the crystal clear results: we even managed to try a touch of deep-sky astrophotography with a fair outcome. First, I would want better polar alignment. Each exposure had good round stars (at least as good as the lens was capable of). However, over a long sequence it drifted in the frame so I nearly lost my target. I think this would take some practice. I’ve seen numerous Vixen telescopes and mounts at star parties and conventions, but never owned or used them personally, and having now experienced the Polarie, I feel like I might have been missing out on some very well-built equipment over the years. Figure 1: M42 wide field; ten 15-second exposures with a Canon T2i and 50-mm lens. In the box, you will find the Polarie unit and nothing more. This is because most of what you need is built-in or stored in the unit body. What’s Not Included (But Would Be Useful)

The standout feature on the Polarie U is the ability to connect your camera directly to it and then control the entire setup from the Polarie U app. And you have the polar scope and a solid wedge. The Vixen Polar Fine Adjustment Unit and the Polar Scope PF-L. The Skywatcher Star Adventurer Mini Pro costs a little less than the Polarie, but it offers much more: You’ve seen those awesome wide-angle Milky Way photos, sometimes with a building or a tree in the foreground. They’re great, right? Want to take one yourself? I’ve taken a few in my time, but never really nailed it. Star trails look nice, but if you don’t want them, it’s awful. The Vixen Polarie can help with that.

Fornax Mounts LighTrack II

The main benefit of the Counterweight Upgrade Kit is that it increases the maximum payload from 2kg to 6.5kg. With a little patience and a fine polar alignment, I was able to generate the image shown in Figure 4. For this image, I used the T2i with a 135-mm lens. This time I took 15 exposures of 2 minutes each. The exposure length was limited by my sky conditions, not the ability of the Polarie. I also oriented the camera vertically to provide a different composition from that of the the wide-field view shown in Figure 1.

We then attached the optional polar scope that enabled us to refine our polar alignment by visually aligning Polaris and two other stars against the image printed within the polar scope. The housing of the Polarie U is plastic, but it feels very rigid and robust and doesn’t flex when pressed. With longer focal lengths and heavier payloads, you will need the optional Counterweight Upgrade Kit. Alternatives
