Nora Roberts is usually an easy read for me. I love thrillers that have a bit of romance to them. But this one just didn't quite do it for me. The beginning had me hooked and I was all about this mysterious man who then went nuts and took everything from her. I actually really liked that Roberts got a little dark and gory with this one. Wiped out emotionally and financially Morgan goes to Vermont and her mother and grandmother. There she finds the solace she so desperately needs and a new purpose. As the Bar Manager for the upscale bar, Après, in the exclusive Resort at Westridge. Not only a new purpose but a man too. Miles Jameson, scion of the family that owns the resort and COO of it. His family has deep roots in the community, and he takes his position there seriously. I really love the way Roberts captured the conversations between Miles and Morgan. Much of this book is written in short, choppy sentences, building that heightened hype and excitement.

Narrator January LaVoy brings a richly layered performance to a story.... She expertly handles the large cast of multigenerational characters" — AudioFile on Hideaway The character development is spot on and I absolutely fell for Miles. I think his gruff exterior and deep feeling, mushy interior is why I couldn’t put this book down. Readers will learn very early on in the story who the con artist/murderer is, but it in no way diminishes the suspense in Identity. The story centers around Morgan rebuilding her life in her old home with her mother and grandmother as she settles into a new romantic relationship with Miles Jameson. Tension builds steadily, driven by the repeated threats from the murderer toward Morgan. She, as well as readers, knows he'll come for her. The anticipation of when, not if, he'll strike sets a dire tone of impending doom and an increasing pace as he draws closer. Characters are brilliantly developed, believable with great debt and complexity. She was where I am in my life right now, always ready for the next thing. Excited for the adventure waking up brings. And then something terrible happens. She loses so much in a moment, falls into that endless grief, only to realize it is so much worse than she could have imagined.

Big thanks to Nora Roberts, St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions. Family love and support play an important role in this novel, on both sides. I loved Morgan’s mother and grandmother (her “ladies”), and appreciated how Morgan’s mother is also a skilled and creative business woman, much stronger, more competent, and happier than Morgan’s memory of her. While Morgan loves her mom, there’s initially a distance there; it was heartwarming to watch them become closer. Part of Morgan’s growth in the novel comes from accepting and trusting in the love and support of her mother and grandmother, and from her growing appreciation for the strong women they are. Morgan was raised in a military family, always moving from place to place. She wants nothing more than to settle somewhere, put down roots, and eventually open her own neighborhood bar. She works two jobs and has a roommate who's like a sister sharing expenses, but then everything falls apart. Her roommate is dead, her identity stolen, and her life destroyed. With no other choice, she goes to live with her mother and grandmother in Vermont.

This novel has plenty of suspense. It is chilling that what happened to Morgan could happen to any woman out there. I liked the characters of Morgan and Miles and their developing relationship. They helped each other and were a great balance to each other's personalities.

Miles Jameson, the hero, is attracted to Morgan’s strength and confidence, along with the vulnerability she tries to hide. He is kind and dependable, if a little brusque and occasionally dictatorial for my taste. He is also perceptive, has a deep love for his family and for the family homestead (now his home) and the family resort. When it comes to the latter, he balances respect for tradition and a willingess to stay current and keep growing. Miles is not Morgan’s direct-line supervisor, but he is a member of the family that owns the resort where she works; I appreciated how carefully Roberts constructed their growing attraction and eventual romantic relationship in light of their employee-employer roles. (Rest assured, it’s entirely mutual every step of the way.) I also appreciated the way that Miles respects Morgan’s strengths while supporting her in whatever ways she needs… even if, occasionally, he acts unilaterally, or she chafes at that support. Miles might not be my first choice for a partner, but he’s perfect for Morgan. And I love his big rescue dog, Howl. Your heart breaks for Morgan and you cheer for her wins as she grows stronger thanks to family and to her new relationship with the Jameson family. I loved the character of her grandma. She is all spirit and spunk and stole the show for me in this one. This book contains mature content and may not be suitable for younger readers. A resiliant heroine, a steadfast hero… and a chilling villain

However, there was one minor flaw that I couldn't overlook. The identity theft portion of the story had some plot holes and inconsistencies, which occasionally made me second-guess the credibility of the plot. These moments pulled me out of the story, preventing it from being a five-star read. Morgan is capable, resilient, a person who makes plans and works towards them, responsible, organized, a fast learner, and creative. Several characters have an impact on Morgan. Luke Hudson is friendly, interesting, a good listener, and confident. Miles Jameson is attractive, blunt, kind, considerate, and respects and values others. These characters, as well as several others in the novel, are well defined with depth and complex traits. They were portrayed in a way that brought them to life.Identity" is an engrossing book that seamlessly combines mystery, suspense, and a captivating romance. The link to the audiobook can be found here Identity: A Novel, narrated by January LaVoy. With its compelling plot and well-developed characters like Nina and Morgan, this novel held me in its grip from start to finish.

There was too much detail in hospitality and bartending. I admit it's interesting, not everyone wants to read a FMC as a writer, author, or editor all the time so this is welcome but I don't think I care enough about every little detail, and makes the pacing terrible. But you may like it more. Luke is already wanted by the FBI. If losing her best friend was not enough, Luke also steals Morgans’s identity. She is on the brink of losing everything. The great characterization and flow of the story held my attention throughout. I can see why she is such a popular author. The last chapters were unputdownable with intense action and a satisfying ending.

The story is about starting over and planting roots when you’ve lost everything but it’s also about this heavy bond between Morgan and “her ladies” (her mom and her grandmother,) which is something really special. As with every book I read I try and dig out the romance and dwell on it and this book had a perfect amount of romance and I was happy I at least got some of the Nora roberts romance.
