We do not claim to be scientists, though we have tried to make our tests as objective, controlled, and repeatable as possible. We did our testing in a garage at 5000 feet (about 1524 meters), where the boiling point of water is 202.97° F (about 94.98° C). We tested the time it took for one liter of water to make a 1.7-quart kettle whistle with each of the small canister and liquid gas stoves. For the stoves with integrated pots, we tested how long it took for them to reach a rolling boil. With each test, we began with a full 4-ounce fuel canister and weighed it for the wind test. Then after the wind test, we weighed the canister and tested for boiling without wind. All of the fuel bottles were full, and the canisters used were identical. Not only could I visually observe that the Amicus' flame was far less affected, I could run the Amicus at a far lower setting. As low as I could turn down the flame, the Amicus never blew out. Not so with the open burner Crux. I was doing a simmer test with the Crux, the flame was steady and had been running for some time, but when a gust of wind came through, the Crux blew out, and I had to re-light the stove.

The other thing to watch out for with the BRS-3000T is the length of the pot supports. At only 2-inches in diameter, you need to be thoughtful about what cookware you choose to use. You won’t want to use anything too heavy, but you also want to make sure that your cookware is stable enough so when the water boils, the pot doesn’t become unstable and tip. For this, you’ll want a liquid fuel or four-season stove. We’ve found liquid fuel stoves to be the most reliable choice in winter. Other Considerations That said, "good" and "perfect" are not one in the same. The Stealth ignition is the best in the business (nobody else really comes close), but even the best ignition is subject to breakage or failure. Always carry a second (or third) source of ignition such as a lighter, matches, or fire steel. Also, be careful when using alcohol stoves because their fuel burns clean blue and can be very hard to see. Always make sure your stove has fully burned out before handling it or attempting to re-fuel. Never use an alcohol stove in a fire ban area. A small amount of spilled fuel can easily ignite dry brush. Solid fuel stoves are just about as light and simple as stoves get. They use Esbit fuel tabs, which burn a low-medium flame for about twelve minutes. All you need to do is open up a fuel tab, light it on fire, and place your pot on a stand over the flame until your water boils. Solid fuel stoves are compact, easy to make, and they’re very quiet too.

The BRS-3000T is small yet powerful

Not all stoves are created equal, and nowhere is this more evident than in the frigid temps of winter camping conditions. If you camp in the warmer monthsonly, this isn’t a concern. Stoves like the JetBoil Flash offer solid wind and weather resistance for cold winter camping; (photo/Mary Murphy) The Soto Amicus is a small, relatively lightweight, relatively inexpensive upright canister stove. There are dozens of such stoves available on the market today. How is the Amicus any different from any other stove? Well, the Amicus is the best built of the lot and has a really nice design, but that's not what sets it apart. Soto claims that they have developed a new type of burner head, one that can handle wind better than other stoves. This windproofness would set the Amicus apart from other stoves. So, either the Amicus handles wind better or it's really nothing special. Therefore, wind testing was the major focus of my field testing. Is Soto just "blowing smoke" or are they really on to something here?

Compatibility: 100g/230g/450g Butane/Propane gas canisters conforming to EN417 standard. It may be hazardous to attempt to fit other gas container types And they work. Not only are they easy to extend and retract, not only do they stay in place once set, they're just danged good pot supports. Of its class, the Amicus has the best pot stability that I've seen. The WindMaster, if one gets the optional 4Flex pot support, has far better pot stability, but the WindMaster is a larger, more powerful, ultralight stove and is really not in the same class as the smaller, budget minded Amicus. The only stove that really comes close to the Amicus in this class is the Snow Peak GigaPower. These stoves connect to refillable fuel bottles. They are generally filled with white gas, but you can also use other fuels, including kerosene and gasoline. This is ideal if traveling overseas. This stove type can be slightly more complicated to use (in other words, it requires maintenance), but it performs well in cold conditions. The BRS-3000T is as intuitive as most other canister stoves like the Soto Amicus or the Snow Peak Giga Power Stove. Where you may need to get creative is protecting the BRS-3000T from the wind. There are various ways you can do this using a foam sleeping pad, a custom made windshield, or your body. Just be sure to allow the heat of the stove to escape so the canister doesn’t overheat. Versatility We were stunned at how fast bubbles began to dance in the pot, taking as few as just over two minutes to reach a rolling boil (depending on elevation and wind conditions). This makes it a solid choice for group trips where you need to whip up multiple meals fast. It also works great for melting large amounts of snow for water.

Compact: All systems are self-contained, fitting the stove and fuel inside the pot. (1.0L Reactor System nests optimally with our new, smaller-diameter 4 oz. canisters, which are sold separately) Integrated System: State-of-the-art stove and high-efficiency cookware are combined into a compact, self-contained and easy-to-use systemThe stove is advertised as being made from “Titanium Alloy”. I’m no metallurgist, but I’ve had a lot of titanium gear. The cooking arms and the centerpiece they are attached to look like solid titanium. these parts have that titanium feel and show the expected heat discoloration from use (which I think adds to titanium’s cool look). Not everyone needs the tiniest stoveon the market. Especially if you camp year-round, you’ll want to choose a four-season stove, or one better rated for cold performance. The Amicus will be far more consistent and predictable than other stoves, giving you the ability to a)plan more accurately, b) conserve fuel, and c) simmer better in wind.

With all the pots that have a recommended max capacity (1l for the 1.7l Reactor, 0.5l for the 1l Reactor etc.), it's still possible to boil nearly full, but especially with the Reactor and it's super fast boil times, you have to be very very careful to watch the stove and turn it off (and get the pot off, because the radiant burner still puts out enough heat to keep the water slightly boiling even after shutoff) immediately once it reaches rolling boil. Obviously not recommended by the manufacturer, since it could boil over pretty easily, and if it did, the hot water over the burner might possibly trigger the thermal shutdown mechanism (and perhaps even burst your canister, which would not be pleasant at all). This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. To return faulty items see our Returning Faulty Items policy. We had no problem balancing a pot on it. With simmer control, we were able to make everything from fluffy pancakes to delicately scrambled eggs. Plus, it got the water boiling for coffee in no time.
