Description

From discussing the three types of rock to the different types of soil to the inner and outer core of Earth, there is much science content to be learned throughout the book. The book was written as if it was talking to the reader and inviting them to take a journey with them! This ingeniously designed and expanding book uncovers facts and knowledge about the earth, layer by layer. It begins with some great questions encouraging the reader to ignore the busyness and distractions of above ground and to ponder on what is happening below ground. Indeed there are many cross-curricular links possible with this book especially geography, science, history or even DT.

My favorite element of the literary craft of this book was the tone that was created through the author's choice of language. it's just that a 'typical' (or a sensational but well-documented) Viking burial could have been shown on one side, and then one from any other period of history or region or culture on the far side of the page, ever so slightly above or below the other. An extraordinary unfolding book to take young geologists to the Earth's core and back again, with richly enticing illustrations. It was such a new experience, it even kept my wiggly 3 year old interested for the majority of the book, which is truly saying something. After reading through the story, they could go outside or to their homes and see what types of things they can find in the soil.

Another way to incorporate this book into the classroom would be to have students make a similar product.

Also, and I realise I'm nit-picking, but I will argue the point of this book was to illuminate - sewage and storm drains/runoff don't always (or ideally) mix together. Children can learn so much information about the world underneath them with this book through the lenses of geology, archeology, and natural history.

Children are introduced to a variety of scientific ideas in the book, including plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and fossils. We zien fossielen, mooie stenen, wortels, metro, dieren die een holletje hebben, we zien hoe dun sommige lagen van de aarde zijn. This lovely non-fiction picture book is a must for any kid (or parent) who enjoys thinking about what exists, grows, hides, tunnels, and may yet to be discovered beneath us. There is a substantial amount of information but not so much as to detract from the contextual nature of the book. The illustrations enables all children to see what is happening in relation to what the author is explaining within the book, providing a strong correlation between the pictures and the words. The information is simply written and a 7 year old could likely read this book independently and younger children could understand the concepts.
