Some hi-fi’s have external AM aerials that tend to look like many wires wound around a plastic loop. This needs to be rotated to find the best signal.

If you are a Sky customer more help can be found here www.sky.com/help//bbcupgrade or you can call 0333 759 5121. You need to have a suitable DAB aerial to receive DAB services.Portable DAB radios will usually have a telescopicone, but if you are retro-fitting a DAB radio into a car, you may need to add a DAB aerial.

Rega Aethos

A radio which can tune to medium and long wave services usually hasan aerial built in, whichyou cannot see. As the aerial is directional, by simply turning the radio you will be able to get the best reception. AM does not use the telescopic aerial. We are bringing forward slightly the switch-off date of our SD channels on satellite platforms from March 2024 to 8 January 2024. This means from 8 January next year, a ‘channel closed’ message will appear on all our SD channel feeds on satellite. As soon as any connection within the circuit gets longer than perhaps 1% of the wavelength of the highest specified frequency (e.g., at 100MHz the wavelength is 3m, so the critical connection length is approx. 3cm) design properties radically change. For example, a specified length and width of a PCB trace can be used as a selective or impedance-matching entity. Common active devices in transistor amplifiers include bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Although active and powered monitors now dominate the studio market, their passive cousins can still do the job needed, they’re still being made — we’ve reviewed a few new passive nearfield monitors in the past couple of years — and they still attract their fair share of users. Along with sales of new monitors, there are also countless pairs of passive speakers in use, be they venerable hi-fi KEFs, Missions or B&Ws, battered old NS-10s and Auratones, or more expensive older studio monitors that continue to do sterling service day in and day out. Advice on choosing and using such speakers is accessible enough, but what about the amps that drive them? Whether you’re buying a new set of speakers, you’ve just landed a bargain set of NS-10s, or your current amp has passed to the great electronics graveyard in the sky, just what do you need to know when choosing a new amp?

For satellite viewers, our help scheme is ready to assist with the transition to HD at www.hdsatelliteupgrade.co.uk. It contains all the information about the changes, the dates when individual HD regions were switched on, and also has details on eligibility for support to help you upgrade your set-top box to HD. De Forest's prototype audio amplifier of 1914. The Audion (triode) vacuum tube had a voltage gain of about 5, providing a total gain of approximately 125 for this three-stage amplifier. If you’re looking to add a warmer & richer tone to your audio, then yes – preamps are definitely good. In fact, they trump anything digital & then some, because of how solid-state preamps don’t contain any moving parts. It’s these moving parts – i.e. the tube – that enables the sound to be so rounded. The successor to our multiple-Award winning Rega Elex-R, one of our favourite amplifiers of the last decade, is thankfully far from a disappointing sequel. The replacement of bulky electron tubes with transistors during the 1960s and 1970s created a revolution in electronics, making possible a large class of portable electronic devices, such as the transistor radio developed in 1954. Today, use of vacuum tubes is limited for some high power applications, such as radio transmitters.Just be aware that this is nothing other than an integrated amplifier for purists. The ITx’s connectivity is limited but adequate for most stereo setups. There are four single-ended line-level inputs, a lone tape output and a pair of modest-looking speaker terminals. So if you play records or use headphones, make sure to budget for extra boxes to do the job. Although saying that, we’ve decided to have a go at it anyway. So read on & we’ll reveal what we believe to be the best tube preamps on sale today + outline some pro tips on how to get the amp that’s right for you. Stereo amplifiers imply two channels of output (left and right), though the term simply means "solid" sound (referring to three-dimensional)—so quadraphonic stereo was used for amplifiers with four channels. 5.1 and 7.1 systems refer to Home theatre systems with 5 or 7 normal spatial channels, plus a subwoofer channel. amplifier, in electronics, device that responds to a small input signal (voltage, current, or power) and delivers a larger output signal that contains the essential waveform features of the input signal. Amplifiers of various types are widely used in such electronic equipment as radio and television receivers, high-fidelity audio equipment, and computers. Amplifying action can be provided by electromechanical devices ( e.g., transformers and generators) and vacuum tubes, but most electronic systems now employ solid-state microcircuits as amplifiers. Such an integrated circuit consists of many thousands of transistors and related devices on a single tiny silicon chip.

Only homes still using SD-only Freesat and Sky satellite boxes will be seeing the red on-screen message - and these boxes will need to be upgraded to continue watching BBC channels. The ‘channel closed’ message will remain in place for a limited time thereafter, as will our help scheme resources. Nevertheless, we are urging impacted homes to take action now to avoid disappointment and loss of any BBC channels.Transistor-based amplification can be realized using various configurations: for example a bipolar junction transistor can realize common base, common collector or common emitter amplification; a MOSFET can realize common gate, common source or common drain amplification. Each configuration has different characteristics. An externally mounted aerial can be attached to many types of DAB portable radio and hi-fi systems. DAB aerials are different from FM or TV aerials, so you need a good quality DAB-specific aerial. An indoor aerial may be good enough, but for the best reception use an outdoor one. Ideally, this shouldbe on the roofor high up on the outside of the building, though it may also give good results in the loft. Another way to classify amplifiers is by the phase relationship of the input signal to the output signal. An 'inverting' amplifier produces an output 180 degrees out of phase with the input signal (that is, a polarity inversion or mirror image of the input as seen on an oscilloscope). A 'non-inverting' amplifier maintains the phase of the input signal waveforms. An emitter follower is a type of non-inverting amplifier, indicating that the signal at the emitter of a transistor is following (that is, matching with unity gain but perhaps an offset) the input signal. Voltage follower is also non-inverting type of amplifier having unity gain.
