There are reasons why companies manufacturing other types of wind instruments are branching off to produce nose flutes. Nose flute (according to Mr. Kiyoshi, a Japanese flute maker) is a category of wind instruments utterly free from all sorts of barriers. Effectively, the nose whistle may produce an extense glissando, in a rather wide range of more than three octaves . A variation, the 'Fangufangu' nose flute of the island of Tonga is made with intact node walls at both ends of the bamboo tube, with the nostril holes on the side in front of the nodes (along with side finger holes) and a hole in the middle of the tube, acting as a vent hole, and taking the place of the open distal end. Thus the 'Fangufangu' can be played from either end, and the disposition of the fingerholes differ from node to vent hole so two alternating scales can be played, but only one scale at a time. We’re not talking about the masters of the flute just yet, but some of the celebrities who played flute in the high school band. In J. G. Frazer's comprehensive work The Belief in Immortality, Vol. 1, p. 252, it is shown that certain tapu flutes, as also bullroarers, were employed in an initiatory ceremony performed over youths in a certain region of New Guinea. Of these flutes the writer remarks:—"The instruments are of two patterns. One is called the male and the other the female, and they are supposed to be married to each other. No woman may see these mysterious flutes." Here we note the same idea of sex, as applied to flutes, which is noted in New Zealand, and another item is recorded in the increasing list of New Guinea-New Zealand parallels.
