ELCs provide a financial contribution towards a first full Level 3 qualification (Certificates and Diplomas), a first Foundation Degree, a first full undergraduate degree or national equivalents. This well-timed update reflects this, bringing into view issues such as how we valorise the different models and approaches, how an intersectional approach to counselling brings into focus issues of power, and also, in a more subtle way, the relevance of the political to the world of counselling.

Students who are EU/EEA or Swiss Citizens who have lived in the UK before 1 January 2021 who do not have indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK or haven’t applied for the EU Settlement Scheme and been granted pre-settled or settled status – please contact the College Registrar on 01934 411 531 for advice on appropriate UKVI student visa fees before you enrol. People who come to counselling are ordinary people experiencing difficulties in their life, talking to a trained counsellor is a way of understanding your life and to take responsibility and choices of our own. First Steps in Counselling continues to evolve in this fifth edition, ensuring that it remains the essential introduction to counselling and ‘counselling-informed helping’ for the 2020s. It doesn’t shy away from difficult questions, but you will feel nurtured and much better prepared by the end. First Steps will introduce you to and guide you through the counselling profession, modalities and skills, and your professional and self-development.That First Steps in Counselling is now in its fifth edition is a testimony to the critical eye cast by its authors as they observe our fast-changing world. This was a recommended read on an Introductory Counselling course that I attended and a book that my tutor had raved about. Wished i'd bought this at the start of my Counselling training, easy to read and so full of knowledge of all the theorys. This textbook is the second edition of the follow-on to First Steps in Counselling – the first edition has been a bestseller every year for twelve years.

For many years he managed counselling services in further and higher education colleges and now runs a private counselling, supervision and mental health mentoring practice in Basingstoke, Hampshire. As I started my journey on the Counselling road, I found this a very useful tool to guide me through the first ideas on what counselling involves. There was even a pang of sadness as we ended our journey together, which they carefully prepared me for.Andy Rogers trained as a counsellor in the late 1990s, initially at Basingstoke College of Technology and then at the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Centre for Counselling Studies, completing a Post-Graduate Diploma in 1999. It contains all the basics that are helpful to know before starting the course and makes a great reference book.

This fifth edition brings the text up to date with recent developments in the counselling professions. This fifth edition builds on the many strengths of the previous editions, drawing on the additional expertise of Paula Williams and Andy Rogers, both of whom bring their own rich heritage as counsellors to the table. First Steps in Counselling has been, for many years, one of those key go-to books for any trainee finding their way. Pete Sanders, Paula J Williams and Andy Rogers position counselling in contemporary society and render the theory, practice and origins of counselling understandable to all.

The qualification you have chosen to study is part of the Legal Entitlements list and you are aged 19-23 at the start of your course and you do not already have a qualification at Level 3 or higher. There is quite a bit of repetition which can get a little irritating and also a great deal of the author's own personal opinions, but all in all, its a good starter book for anyone looking to find out a bit more about counselling in general before beginning a course at Certificate level. Paula J Williams is a person-centred counsellor, trainer, lecturer and supervisor based in Scotland.
