Because the seating cushions and other areas come under more stress (wear & tear) it is important to prepare them. To do this it is best to rub them with the Leather Prep and an abrasive pad, this application removes the leather finish. A good way to apply this is to place two cotton wool balls on the abrasive pad and then wet them in prep, fold the abrasive pad over the balls and then use it to rub the leather. This way applies the prep in the correct and sparing way making the product last longer. If necessary repeat the process for a second time to obtain the correct finish, always making sure that the previous layer is totally dried. Then take TRG Color Dye and stir the bottom of the bottle with the paintbrush until getting a homogeneous color. With the half-wrung paintbrush, paint the joints between the sole and the leather, on sewings, scratches, etc.

The Leather Finish is the same finish that we removed at the start of the process. It’s applied by airbrush so it’s important to ensure your airbrush is cleaned thoroughly after spraying the Leather Colourant. After your leather is deglazed, you're ready to add color. We sell Fiebings dye, which is a penetrating alcohol-based leather dye. It doesn’t hurt to test the dye on a scrap piece to figure out how to achieve your desired color. Two coats right out of the bottle might do, while for others, adding a dye reducer to tone down the color may be preferable. Once you’ve figured out your preference, you can apply the dye. All of our pre-mixed colours come in a satin finish. However, if you are using our colour match service, we will also match the shine for you.

The first step is preparing the leather ready for applications of colour. We do this to remove any waxes, oils or silicones that may be present on the leather. Not removing these could cause adhesion problems. Prepping the leather also removes the manufactured finish. If the leather is very dirty, clean it first with our Leather Cleaner. One kit will easily dye multiple pairs of shoes, or handbags. Very little is used per use, as it’s a true dye, when following directions. The finish is applied exactly the same way as the colourant. When you spray the Leather Finish onto the leather, make sure it is dry before spraying on a second coat. Like the Leather Colourant, you can use a hairdryer to speed up this process. The first step was to prep (remove/reduce) the original coating on the leather. In this step we are re-applying that coating.Some folks like to finish with nothing but a leather conditioner or oil to help soften the leather again. Some like to apply conditioner and then apply a finish of their choosing and others will just jump straight to leather sealers. There are several options out there, so try out which process works best for you on some scrap! We recommend Resolene to finish your project, but we also carry Bag Kote! Be sure to apply it evenly, working out any bubbles or streaks that may occur. Use a clean, lint-free rag, sponge, paintbrush, or airbrush to apply your finish!
