The Dundonald Liberation Army has announced they are standing for election and want you to cast your votes when they take to the stage of the Grand Opera House later this year. Following a recent sell-out run at the MAC, the fictional cross-community paramilitary group will present their final saga 'Vote DLA' in June 2023.

Then Jo Donnelly and Matthew McElhinney stepped up to the mark with a love scene between Davy and posh Norma. He confided shyly, maybe after a manly bevvy or two, that his mum had always said she didn’t know who his father was. I've worked with Matthew McElhinney now for years, including on Three's A Shroud which we took to the Waterfront Hall in 2017 and 2018. And the first time I saw Matthew Forsythe was in a smaller production of A Night In November in The Devenish [directed by McElhinney]. He was fantastic in that so I got speaking to him on the night and we cast him in Dog DLA Afternoon at the Opera House." You might think satire is dead but playwright Stephen G Large got a few hits with this ambitious Trumpian story of the Dundonald brigade going legit and finally storming the Lisburn and Castlereagh council chamber. The CYM could be considered as the forerunners to the DLA after they smuggled the first consignment of Super Soakers into the area during the early Nineties. The DVF took a no nonsense approach to the vandalizing of flower beds belonging to local residents, while the short-lived OMD disbanded over regrets they had named themselves after an Eighties new wave synth group. Vote DLA posters appeared on lamp posts during the recent council elections, perhaps giving voters a tantalising glimpse of alternative political leadership...However, DLA's second-in-command Horse becomes increasingly resentful of Davy’s lavish new lifestyle as a public servant, with a seemingly bottomless expense account. Horse rejects the DLA’s ceasefire and splinters the movement. Jo Donnelly adds that this plays particularly badly during the cost of living crisis: “We feel they’re getting a pay cheque while we don’t know what to do about money.” Birthed in the outraged aftermath of Lisburn City Council's rude 2015 power grab from long-time caretaker Castlereagh Borough Council, the DLA take a pair of crossed SuperSoaker waterguns as its crest and have a list of 'demands' that include "a public declaration by Lisburn City Council that it is the right of all the people of Dundonald to decide the future of Dundonald" and "compulsory under-age drinking to re-commence in the Moat Park, effective immediately".

The loss of his younger brother and his friend, followed soon after by the pandemic, made for a very difficult time in the playwright’s life. However, he found solace in his work, and he hopes that the new show next week will be able to provide a measure of respite for some in the audience. For Stephen, along with that sense of accomplishment will be the memory of three young men who lost their lives in the last few years. In honour of them, he has teamed up with the suicide prevention charity PIPS to offer billboard advertising throughout the promotional campaign for Vote DLA, as well as pledging to make a donation at the end of the run.The pair bounced incredibly off each other and were not afraid to make themselves look the fool in the name of comedy and it paid off. Horse wants to support his friend Davy, but he's also getting it in the ear from Suzie because she needs her Balenciaga sliders and dermal fillers and whatnot. Stephen G. Large says with feeling that “theatre is the only unfiltered version of what’s going on. People may say you should rein it in, maybe if you’re working for the BBC”. This outrageous comedy is written by Stephen G. Large and produced by Soda Bread Theatre, starring Matthew McElhinney and Matthew Forsythe and will introduce Jo Donnelly to the cast for the first time. My younger brother Aaron died in 2019, and then [in 2020, radio presenter] Stephen Clements, who did so much to help me get my stuff out there.
