Description
Certainly visually impressive, the Skullcandy Aviators offer middling performance for a mobile set of headphones, but they certainly are far from ideal for the price you’d pay. Despite their fashionability, they have quite a few concerns that warrant pause before buying something.
It's unclear precisely what the "association" is, but Skullcandy has at least drawn the endorsement of Jay-Z and Roc Nation. Which, we will confess, filled us with some trepidation, since some rappers seem to have a predilection for limitless bass at the expense, sound wise, of pretty much everything else.
These look really nice (to me at least). While style is at the near bottom of the list of things to look for in a headphone i can't deny i like the look of these unlike many other gaudy skullcandy products. Since most consumers are not the most poignant of audiophiles, the large swath of customers wants to own headphones they can use casually at a low price.
Beats headphones, in general, have a flashy and glossy appearance compared to Skullcandy. For the most part, Beats headphones have a B logo on them that matches the headphone’s shade. I knew that the Aviators and Mix Masters were for the most part well received here. I tried them on before but they didnt impress me. Since I was looking for some portable headphones i decided to give these a shot. FiiO’s latest entry into the mobile market and I have high hopes for this paring. In short, this is a great match up also. The software eq mode on the FiiO was the tipping point. Upping the treble to 4, the gain to 6 and the bass to 2 gave me exactly what I wanted – more sparkle in the top end, a little bass oomph and smooth mids with great vocals. Not quite as forward sounding as the powerful PB2 nevertheless the E17 amp did a great job with nice separation, better than average sound stage and a very high degree of musicality. On a price and performance, this is the match for me but the Pb2 just edges out for me if you happen to have that in your collection. The soundstage is not actually very wide in open standard, but for a small closed portable, it’s pretty impressive. And the imaging while a bit left/rightish still utilizes the width quite well. Just htat there’s no depth whatsoever. I used " friends on mushrooms" by infected mushroom to see how they did with some energetic and heavy EDM. Overall the Skullcandy Aviators have a decent frequency response, save for a dip in the 2-3kHz range. Otherwise, they stay fairly well within our ideal limits: you shouldn’t notice many obnoxious mufflings of certain instruments. Still, there are those out there that don’t exactly like a flat response, so if you are listening to music on your phone, see if you can’t mess around with an app that allows you to equalize your frequency response during listening sessions.
I will admit I have never been a fan of what Skullcandy have offered to date for various reasons but when I saw the initial promotional poster and video’s of the Aviator I blinked and paused. I really digged the design and loved the color scheme, in particular the brown version. It howls of retro mixed with bling and by golly it manages to be extreme yet graceful enough for even us older generation not to feel like an ass with it on our head. It’s kind of cool actually. In addition, the amount of shares Beats holds in the audio industry alone makes it a much more reputable company than Skullcandy. In buying a Skullcandy headphone, you will find the build quality quite robust and dense. However, the plastic yoke they provide is not as durable as the rest of the design. The Skullcandy Aviators have a soft leather (or leather-like) material where the cup meets your cranium, and the resulting fit is very comfortable. Over time, you won’t necessarily forget that you’re wearing headphones, but the experience isn’t an uncomfortable one. In the lower frequencies, the Skullcandy Aviators seem to have a slight distortion problem, but it’s still low enough that you probably won’t hear it. Ultimately, we preferred the accuracy and overall fullness of audio on the Aviators to the overwhelming bass and distorted highs on the Loops. Phone Calls Skullcandy offers some of the most colorful headphones on the market. If you like to match your tech accessories to your outfits, they tend to have several color schemes for each model, including two or three-tone variants and camo/military color schemes.
