Furthermore, broadcasting your strategy can provide your opponents with a blueprint of how to stop you. You take turns to knock lumps out of each other, choosing to attack, withdraw, or try to negotiate an end to the clash. It tends to run about 45 minutes, though some games can be more like 90 if players are more defensive. But remember this doesn’t let you win until another phase, so other players can potentially take your hard-earned victory condition away. Season cards allow you to do basic actions (in different ways) while triskell cards give you the opportunity to react to what your opponent does OR make powerful combos.

Inis is not just about fielding massive armies and smashing your opponents; it’s about outsmarting them and outmaneuvering them—because, oddly enough, this is a game with fighting that believes that fighting is bad. Join the community and come discuss games like Codenames, Wingspan, Brass, and all your other favorite games! This will not end your turn for the round unless all other players subsequently pass, at which point the round ends. We were able to negotiate some joint attacks on a stronger player using it, to the mutual benefit of at least a couple players. I’ve described the game to some as Concordia + Cosmic Encounter, which might be inexact, but captures my love for this game.Playing the right card at the wrong time is just as bad as playing the wrong card in the first place. The power of these particular cards stems from the fact that they give you extra actions in a given round, and the actions they give you are different from the normal fare. It’s a deep game about power struggles, and it’s one that makes a very interesting statement about them. Sanctuaries, driving victory as they do, are the opposite – they shift the reward ratio so that even significant risks might be worth taking.

I moved into a neighboring tile to try to also get Sanctuaries, but was thwarted by a truly nasty Yellow card that benefited my opponent in combat. Kingmaking” is a term that gets bandied about in board gaming circles, often with a snort of derision. They could simply be inserted into the base game (minus one Epic Tale card), and an unsuspecting player could be taught the base game’s rules and never even know they didn’t originally come with the game. Between action cards, epic tale cards, advantage cards and territory passives there are so many opportunities that you never know how a game will play out.

Inis is a game that makes me wonder if people, including many longtime gamers, truly know what board games are capable of. Yes, there are elements of passive-aggressive nastiness and direct combat, so conflict-averse gamers need not apply.

The game shines due to how its elegant, easily taught rules and mechanics give way to a complex tactical puzzle that requires a lot of mental agility to navigate well. The game plays out in a thrust/counter-thrust manner between players as they vie for regions, resources, armies and victory conditions, while preventing others from doing the same. However, the ways they can interact are myriad and often surprising, giving the game immediate depth. At this point, you had better believe everyone else at the table will do whatever they can to stop that from happening. You need to calculate who you can and cannot attack, or create mighty combos that will leave your enemy no chance — but keep in mind that your enemy might have good red cards that might mess your plans up. Every game I’ve played – a number approaching 20 at this point – has produced numerous surprising and exciting moments.
