This book is part of the British Library " Crime Classics" series these books were uncovered at the library and were so good they decided to republish them They are by Authors writing in the 20s and 30s who were famous at the time but have been long forgotten and out of print . Mehrere Passagiere machen sich auf den Weg, um einen anderen Bahnhof zu erreichen, in der Hoffnung, dort einen Zug erwischen zu können.

One critic for the Saturday Review of Literature reviewed one of his later books writing that it was "amusing, satirical, and [a] frequently hair-raising yarn of an author who got dangerously mixed up with his imaginary characters.By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. When the porter has no idea when the tracks might be cleared, a group of passengers afraid their Christmas plans will be ruined, set out in hopes of making a connection at the Hemmersby Station, not too far distant.

However, while I found myself saying “Ah-ha” many times in the course of the story, the final resolution dragged out so long that that ultimate, satisfying “AH-HA” never happened. For most of the book it seemed the mystery was going one way but in the final third, the arrival of Mr.There is plenty of mystery here, lots of melodrama and atmosphere, and a diverse cast of characters. Despite the excellent, yet misleading, cover, this story does not take place on a train but is essentially a country house mystery. However walking in unfamiliar countryside without a map and very little visibility is easier said than done. Farjeon subverts expectations right away by beginning in a snowbound train where a murder may have taken place in an adjoining compartment.

The British Library Crime Classics have excelled themselves with this delightfully lively and tantalising novel, which was first published in 1937. Perfect for large spaces such as living rooms, kitchens, and hallways, this large format marble-effect tile features a sleek and versatile design with a white base colour and subtle grey veining, which will add high-end style and character to any room. It is still not that often that I have come across depictions of characters suffering from shell shock in the original 1920s/30s mysteries. It starts out quite promising, and has some nice observations on human nature (much underlined on Kindle -- get a life, people! Mr Thompson falls ill and starts hallucinating, and Jessie Noyes appears to have some kind of innate psychic sensitivity and seems to be picking up evidence that one or more horrid crimes have been committed in the house. Many of Farjeon's works had been forgotten, but the figure of Ben in Number 17 appeared again in a string of novels, including Ben on the Job (1932), reissued in 1955 and 1985. More than 155,000 copies in the series have been sold this year, but with Mystery in White accounting for 60,000 of those sales. Indeed the whole story is handled lightly, with lots of wit and plenty of superb observation of the charmingly ill-assorted characters. If you’re looking for a book to read when snowed in somewhere remote then this is either the perfect read, or will produce sleepless nights. Die Charaktere waren alle toll ausgearbeitet und der Autor hat es geschafft, mit seinen Worten Bilder in meinem Kopf zu erzeugen.

For a moment or two he nearly suffocated, while countless soft, icy pellets invaded his back as though he were being bombarded by silent salvos from heaven. A train stuck in the impossible snow, snow that won't let up, strangers together deciding to try to walk to the next station, finding a deserted house, fire laid tea ready to be served, but the house is empty. It's a very easy read, and perfect for December nights, but towards the end I did find that too much of the big reveal was delivered through dialogue instead of action. At this point, shades of stories from Goldilocks to the fate of the Mary Celeste jostled pleasantly in my unconscious. There is a point where it starts talking about ghosts, and I have to be honest and say that I nearly lost interest then, but it was as if someone then saw sense and brought it back to trying to solve a crime. She felt herself sinking back into an easy, amiable past, where the fight for bread-and-butter – often so sordid a fight – did not exist. It is worth both the new edition and the praise, although it is for me a mystery whose journey is more engaging than its eventual arrival.
