She added: “Tregolls is in great hands and will have a very experienced local headteacher in the role until a permanent headteacher is recruited. I leave knowing what a superb team Tregolls has in place, knowing what fantastic teachers are supporting the children, and that there exciting plans for the future.” Set in Victorian London this is #41 in the series if you can believe it. Having followed Mrs. Jeffries from the beginning I have come to know the characters like old friends. Everyone is a likable individual and somehow the author has managed to keep them fresh and engaging in every story. Eccentric Annabeth Gentry pretty much keeps to herself. Besides her recent inheritance - and the attention her bloodhound gets for digging up a body - her life is, in fact, rather dull. Over the next few days, a couple things were clear to the police. One, her husband and stepchildren don’t have a lot of respect or love for her. Two, most other people liked Harriet, including her staff. One of the family resentments stems from Harriet being the one with the purse strings. They depended on her for everything. And she was one day away from changing her will, of which they greatly benefited. Mrs Jeffries is an unusual character for Victorian housekeeper. She has an open, astute mind, she likes Walt Whitman's poems, she doesn't think the people of colour are heathen. She is essentially a mother hen tending to Inspector Witherspoon who gets squeamish around corpses (No wonder he can't solve crimes! 🙄). She is firm but loving with younger servants and caring to the older ones. She is a good thinker and analyst. All in all she makes a great detective. Alas we are in Victorian period. Women are not capable for that sort of work or any good work for that matter. The story has subversive nuances and sometimes I felt the narrator speaks in a sneaky satiric tone.

It said: “The new headteacher will build on and enhance present relationships with other schools while driving forward the reputation of the school to inspire stakeholders. The next headteacher will have the full support of an active and supportive Board of Governors, a committed senior leadership team and a dedicated staff body.” Mrs. Jeffries, Inspector Witherspoon’s secret weapon, uses her polished detection skills to solve even the dirtiest crimes. When Sutcliffe Manufacturing’s general office manager is murdered, a figure from Mrs. Jeffries’ past begs for her help. Despite the case being assigned to another inspector, Mrs. Jeffries intervenes to prevent a grave miscarriage of justice. Are you ready to unravel the enigma in “ Mrs. Jeffries Defends Her Own“? Let’s delve into this captivating mystery and discover the secrets hidden within. Mrs. Jeffries Turns the Tide Inspector Gerald Witherspoon has solved more homicides than any other Scotland Yard detective, but he didn’t accomplish that alone. The inspector and Constable Barnes have had assistance from Witherspoon’s household and a few close friends without his knowledge. In his newest case, two of those friends, Luty Belle Crookshank and her butler/friend Hatchet, are first on the scene. A man with many enemies is murdered at the archery club where Hatchet was participating in a competition. Hatchet and Luty are able to give Mrs. Jeffries, Witherspoon’s housekeeper and super sleuth, first-hand knowledge of the crime to help her deduce who the killer is. The first book Victorian-era mystery series “ The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries,” features Inspector Witherspoon and his housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries, who assists in solving crimes. When a doctor is found dead, Mrs. Jeffries investigates despite her employer’s discomfort with questioning suspects, using her wit to uncover the truth behind the murder. Mrs. Jeffries Dusts For CluesIn this Victorian mystery “ Mrs. Jeffries Rights a Wrong,” Thomas Mundy is murdered in London’s Wrexley Hotel. Inspector Witherspoon investigates and discovers Mundy has a dual reputation as both a charming businessman and a deceitful con man with enemies worldwide. Mrs. Jeffries and the team work together to identify who had the motive to end Mundy’s life. Mrs. Jeffries and the Three Wise Women

When newcomer Ellen Langston-Jones is found dead, Inspector Witherspoon suspects Lucius Montague, who was seen threatening her. Despite everyone’s belief in Montague’s guilt, Mrs. Jeffries has doubts. Facing the challenge of saving an unlikeable character, she must change the investigation’s course or risk an innocent man taking the fall for the true killer. Prepare to unveil the truth in the gripping tale of “ Mrs. Jeffries Turns the Tide.” Mrs. Jeffries and the Merry Gentlemen In “ Mrs. Jeffries Speaks Her Mind,” eccentric Olive Kettering claimed someone wanted to harm her, but no one took her seriously. When she’s shot and killed, numerous suspects emerge, all wanting her dead. Mrs. Jeffries fearlessly speaks her mind in pursuit of justice, determined to solve the case and bring the killer to light. Mrs. Jeffries Forges Ahead Even with the premise that Mrs. Jeffries is the brains behind the Inspector and leads him to what needs to be done to solve the cases, it just beggared belief that someone who doesn't even know what to do at a crime scene, or have the first clue what questions to even ask could pull off his job. Not to mention how unlikely it would be that the constables or other people involved in his work could possibly have any respect for him or take instructions from him. The evidence was all there: a dead body, two dessert plates, and a gun. As if poor Mr. Ashbury had been sharing a piece of cake with his own killer! The old bloke had plenty of enemies. In “ Mrs. Jeffries On the Trail,” a young flower girl is murdered on a foggy night in a deserted post-riot street. Inspector Witherspoon seeks Mrs. Jeffries’ exceptional detection skills to solve the mystery. Mrs. Jeffries Plays the Cook

The Mrs. Jeffries Series in Order (41 Books)

I'm wondering if Rufus Farley, the club manager, is the murderer. He's an officious man who values his position over justice. He caters to the whims of the wealthy and doesn't seem to like scandal and Jeremy Marks ALWAYS brought scandal with him. Mr. Marks wasn't even a member and if his fiancé really did break it off with him as the gossips claim, Mr. Farley would have no reason to keep Mr. Marks around. Plus Mr. Farley flat out lies to the Inspector, more than once I think. In “ Mrs. Jeffries and the Missing Alibi”, Inspector Witherspoon is wrongly accused of murder and banned from an investigation by Scotland Yard. But, with his housekeeper and partner in crime, Mrs. Jeffries, by his side, they defy expectations and work tirelessly to clear his name. Mrs. Jeffries Stands Corrected

Tregolls School comprises a nursery and area resource base as well as two form entry from reception to Year 6. Completion of a large extension in 2017 took its capacity to 420 pupils. Mrs. Jeffries aids Inspector Witherspoon in investigating the murder of a despised London businessman. Juggling her kitchen duties while skillfully pursuing the killer, prepare for a gripping Book 7. Mrs. Jeffries and the Missing Alibi Train enthusiast Francis Humphreys was was drawing his last breath while his relatives and neighbors were over for tea. But Inspector Witherspoon wonders: If everyone was downstairs, who could have stolen into Francis' second-story study, killed him, and escaped? In this book, the Inspector has put the household on a tight budget. To keep in line with this new ruling, Cook has dusted off an old cookbook with recipes that are as tasty as the dust but very economical. Not only is the Inspector suffering through these frugal meals, he is also working through a new murder of a business man who has a long list of possible suspects. Seems this business man has cheated his investors our of a nice chunk of money. The Inspector is trying to focus on finding clues and interviewing witnesses, while trying to ignore hunger pains from his diet at home. Join Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard and his resourceful housekeeper, Mrs. Jeffries in Book 2, as they delve into a challenging case involving a vanished maid and a priceless brooch. The duo’s tireless determination drives them to uncover the truth when they discover the brooch on a deceased woman. The Ghost and Mrs. Jeffries

Publication Order of Life at Sixteen Books

It was a most peculiar murder. A man's body was found in the canal - but the evidence showed that he had drowned in a bathtub. It didn’t take many solves until Gerald had the attention of the higher ups, and he left the records room to become the inspector who solved more homicides than anyone in the Metropolitan Police Department. He is humble, unassuming, and respectful. His servants and even some of their informants fondly call him “our inspector”. Mrs Jeffries, the housekeeper manages Mrs Goudge the cook, Betsy the maid, Wiggins the foreman, Smythe the coachman in their investigations while adhering to Inspector’s request for practicing more household economies (producing plain, unpalatable meals and unlit fires). As usual American Widow Luty and her butler Hatchet aid in the detecting with knowledge of Colt 45s- the murder weapon and their upper crust connections. Some aspects of this series strike me differently now, especially since I've read a lot more Victorian Literature than I had when I was a teenager. For one thing, the dialogue isn't historically accurate or at least not consistently so. However, I did appreciate that different realities of the time period are brought up as we learn about the hardships the characters have faced. I liked that the book didn't try to completely idealize Victorian life but was still pleasant and positive in tone.
