In terms of load, the max rider weight is 125 kg (265 lbs) and undoubtedly, the Model One struggles to hit top speeds if the rider is on the upper end of the scale. Folding & Portability It folds up fast, it’s aesthetic, and everything about it is made to be zero-maintenance. Those looking for a scooter that requires little upkeep, looks good, and performs well will find what they’re looking for right here. Performance and ride quality Speed & Acceleration However, on smooth roads this scooter is actually a dream to ride. Super-smooth, in fact, which is the reason we’d really only recommend it if your usual every day route is on well-paved roads. Otherwise, it won't be an entirely comfortable experience. The Unagi Model One Voyager electric scooter is a poetic masterclass of engineering design, but it isn’t without its faults. The downside of such a sleek and elegant scooter is that it isn’t as robust as larger models. This lightweight ride is rated for riders up to 220 lb. (100 kg), which will fit the majority of us but still precludes more riders than many other larger e-scooters. The major benefit of the electronic brake? No maintenance is required. However, electronic brakes clearly won’t work if the power suddenly shuts off and so Unagi added the rear fender brake as a safety precaution.

Whether you opt for the single-motor E250 or the dual-motor E500, both are built with a monitoring system to prevent overheating to ensure long battery life. Weight & Load Mode two is ideal for daily riding or commuting and has a top speed of 12 mph. Its balanced throttle means you can keep the scooter at a steady pace. Now’s the time to go all-in, as Unagi is releasing their All-Access subscription—a service that offers you a guaranteed, insured, worry-free experience with the most design-forward electric scooter around. The manufacturer claims that the scooter has a braking distance of 13 feet (396 cm) on a dry road. However, real-world tests show that the dual electronic brakes have a braking distance of 800 cm – quite suitable for electronic brakes. Additionally, when combined with the rear foot brake, the braking distance reduces to 510 cm.

For those planning on making longer rides on their scooter, the ride comfort metric will be one to pay attention to as it covers the overall feel of the vehicle with a particular focus on rough surfaces. Simply put, the Model One was one of the least comfortable scooters to ride in the class. This appraisal is largely the result of its sold rubber "never flat" tires. Adding to this effect is the scooter's lightness, which offers little dampening on rough surfaces. All told, the ride on the Model One was rather rough compared to the other scooters in the class. Portability The other quibble is that the Voyager’s electronic horn is pretty feeble. When I was riding it in Manhattan, I could barely hear it over the din of the city traffic. It needs something louder to alert others in front of you. Unagi Model One Voyager review: Range and battery life You won’t even see the usual brake levers or large bell here; just another thumb control that's similar to the throttle and a button above that for the horn. The brake and the throttle controls sit on either side of the dash for a more balanced look. However, they are for people who want a portable urban commuter they can take into the coffee shop or leave on display in their living room. It might not sound as sexy as when we talk about acceleration, but the Unagi’s braking power and speed at which it can come to a standstill is pretty decent.

There’s even a new app interface for interacting with the scooter, which anyone who appreciates the techier side of EVs will enjoy. lighter than aluminum, the Unagi’s magnesium alloy handlebar is a thing of beauty. Sleek and sexy and milled from a single piece of magnesium alloy, the integrated top bar creates seamlessness found in few electric scooters.

Handlebar grips are made of quality silicon rubber and have a tapered, elliptical shape that feels ergonomic. The grips are firmly fused to the handlebars and don’t shift when holding onto them. The benefit of airless tyres is that they’re completely puncture-proof. However, you do sacrifice a good degree of comfort over pneumatic tyres. While the Model One electric scooter rides superbly on flat, smooth tarmac, when you’re on paving slabs or any surface that’s less than perfectly smooth, you can feel all the lumps and bumps through your hands and feet. We believe that portability is key when it comes to designing the perfect scooter. That's why we make it our primary objective with every scooter we create, and it's embedded in our core DNA. But it's not just about being lightweight; winning in portability means designing every detail with ease of use in mind.

Sadly, it comes with the same flaws as well

While the Unagi Model One is a decent quality, simplistic scooter, it is fairly expensive for what you get. As such, we recommend you look at other models in our review before settling on the Model One. What Other Electric Scooters You Consider? This e-scooter comes with both dual electronic brakes and a rear foot brake for your peace of mind. The electronic brakes used in concert with the foot brake are very responsive, allowing the Unagi to come to a complete stop from full speed in just under 17 feet (5.18 m). (The electronic brake by itself takes a little longer, at 25 ft / 7.62 m). You’ll already have an inkling by now that Unagi places high importance on quality standards throughout its design and manufacturing process. From the carbon fiber and magnesium alloy to the glossy finish, the Model One really is a refined specimen. Only the hard plastic latch release belies this Ferrari-style scooter. There are both front and rear electric brakes, as well as a rear fender brake. There’s some conjecture about whether electronic brakes are as good as mechanical ones but the Model One’s brakes are a solid example of how good they can be. Coming in at a cool 26 lbs (10.4 kg), the Model One is easily portable. But don’t let the fear of flimsiness put you off – the Model One doesn’t feel like it would break easily. This is largely because of its stem being made of carbon fiber, which not only helps reduce weight but also enables the stem to be narrow without forsaking durability.
