In theory, yes it is possible to make them longer, however, for safety reasons we have set the maximum height at 18mm. We suggest you have at least half of your stem clamping around your original steerer tube. You’re likely to find yourself in this position if you’ve bought a second-hand bike and the previous owner has cut the steerer tube shorter than your desired length. Normally I wear gloves+Knee pads... but also like to ride my bike, wearing only my helmet. And sometimes full armour (ocasionally).

Fear not! We have you covered. We’re going to be getting into everything you need to know about steerer tubes, covering:If you need to add 50+ mm you may have the wrong bike, or try to make the wrong bike out if it. Or someone cut the fork steerer way too short (one reason to not buy complete bikes..). Sorry for the bad news. Maybe try very high riser bar. Often when riders cut down their steerer tubes, it’s to increase performance by providing a more aerodynamic riding position.

So if you’re looking into extending that steerer tube, we humbly suggest you reassess and go for a new front fork, a high-rise stem, or a different bike. So unless you’re looking for peak performance, it may be advisable to persevere with a slightly higher handlebar position. Put simply, headset spacers enable you to easily adjust the height of your handlebars, which is an essential element of bike fit for BMX, MTB and road riders. In the particular case of the latter (road cycling), the correct bar height is key for comfort and performance. Do stem risers work?

Brand

A stem riser is a hollow tube designed to fit over your fork's steer tube where it goes above your bike's head tube by means of pinch bolts similar to what you would see on standard threadless stems, effectively extending the length of your steer tube and putting the rider in a much more upright position. What is the steerer tube on a bike?

Cutting your steerer tube can hurt the bike’s resale value, though, and this becomes more severe with a more severe cut. Note that if you’re riding a bike that fits the rest of your body, the steerer tube is unlikely to be too short – assuming it’s not been cut down drastically by a previous owner. And if everything feels too short, you should probably be riding a frame in a larger size. TDMAN: 1 - In the 3 months I've had my OneUp EDC tool, I've used it 3 times for myself (including once for plugging a hole in my tire so I didn't have to walk home) and a few times to help friends and once to help a stranger. However, if this isn’t right for you, there are other, cheaper workarounds. #2. Use A High-Rise Stem The answer is no, it's not significantly different in terms of safety whether your stem got where it is using an extender versus an uncut steerer. Many punctures... pump your tyres up, ride smoother, set up your suspension better or ride more robust tyres! Now, remove the spacers and stem until you’re left with just the steerer tube, and mark a second line 3 mm below your first mark, ensuring it’s level. Optimizing your setup can be fun and engaging, and finding new ways to rework your gear for a better riding experience is rewarding.
