Due to covid and new contactless deliveries, our carriers will not require a signature but will take down the recipients name as POD. To choose the correct size backer rod to use, measure the gap you want to fill with a ruler or tape measure to determine the width and depth of the gap. Select a backer-rod diameter that is approximately 15 to 25% larger than the width of the joint to give a firm base. It is important to avoid over-compressing the backer rod, as this can cause it to lose its shape and affect the performance of the sealant.

Closed-cell backer rods should not be used with sealants that cure by reacting with moisture in the air because the closed cells will not allow air in from the back of the sealant bead, in turn retarding the cure. Tried to obtain Wide Gap Joint Fill unsuccessfully all over the country without success but Sealant Supplies came up trumps! Only issue once had is that if it’s not fully inserted it can come back out at some areas as it expands.I used white plastic quadrant mouldings around our bath, intended for use by double glazing installation. the sealant is pushed to the bond line with a spatula, ensuring wet-out of the sealant to the substrate. I’m particularly bad with sealant I never get it applied in a smooth manner without creating an awful and sticky mess. The rod should be inserted into the joint, pushing it down until it reaches the bottom of the joint. Without tooling, the bond area between the sealant and the sides of the joint may not be sufficient to prevent the sealant from pulling away from the sides of the joint.

I am re-doing the silicone on my bathtub and upon removing the silicone, I have seen cracked or missing grout/filler behind the area where the silicone used to be. It is inserted into a joint to control sealant depth and create a backstop to allow proper sealant tooling.Closed cell joint backing foam also known as backer rod or polycord, is a flexible polyethylene cord. Reference must be made to limitations regarding dimensions and configuration described in the ETA 23/0088.

Compatible with all know types of sealants to control the depth of the sealant in proper relation to joint width. To install the rod, you can use your fingers or a smooth rounded ended tool to push it into the gap, leaving the finished surface approximately 5-mm back from the front edge of the face of the gap, to allow the silicone to adhere to both the rod and the two edges of the structure it has been injected into. It also enables proper sealant tooling when inserted into a joint as the backer rod allows for appropriate depth. Once cured, the foam can be sawn or plastered over after only an hour providing the working temperatures (can and surfaces) are between +5oC to +25oC, ideally 20oC. Yes, backer rods can be painted over, just make sure the backer rod is clean, dry, and covered in the sealant before painting.
