Description

The book ended with Cloud Wolf promising Twig that he would never abandon him again, and the sky pirates setting off for Undertown.

In addition, the plot is worked on constantly by both of us and, when they are around, our children! It was visually inspired: Riddell would draw pictures for Stewart who would in turn build the story around them.

Paul Stewart is the author of many books for children including The Midnight Hand and The Wakening . Paul: My main inspiration for the Deepwoods was perhaps the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, though other books–Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Gormenghast, Gulliver's Travels– also played their part. After a gyle goblin guides him to safety, Twig meets an injured banderbear, one of the forest's dominant predators. For younger readers there is the Blobheads series, while for the very young, Paul has written several picture books, including the Rabbit and Hedgehog series, In the Dark of the Night and, his latest, Wings. The creativity in the world building is simply phenomenal, elevating every plot with ridiculously well crafted parts of the woods, fantasy creatures, … And the drawings help a lot too. For example, once Twig makes the near-fatal mistake of straying from the path, he encounters oakelves, a halitoad, a hoverworm, Slaughterer’s, hammelhorns, a skullpelt, a caterbird, the bloodoak, Gyle goblins, their Grossmother, a spindlebug and the horrific rotsucker in very short succession. Beyond the Deepwoods is the first book in The Twig Trilogy, a fantasy series for older children / young adults.
