Description

The novel follows Meridian Hill, a young black woman and college student in the late 1960s, as she embraces the civil rights movement at a time when the movement becomes violent. and Meridian herself, a black woman who cannot lie and for whom ideas are simply real and to be acted upon with her life. In her public life, Walker has worked to address problems of injustice, inequality, and poverty as an activist, teacher, and public intellectual. I have always been a fan of her clear prose and rich characters, and I was reminded that I had never read Meridien, her second novel, which is now available for e-readers, as are all her works. The relationship between Meridian and her mother, Meridian's adolescence and the sexual abuse at the hands of Daxter etc, the concept of black family, sexuality, and citizenship, and the way black women know white men have perceived them and acted on those perceptions.

I do recommend it but one does have to have a certain temperament and openness to an Alice Walker book because oh yes you will get a story but you will also get an education and be expected to go out and participate in the conversation as a whole. Meridian's political commitment is not to end in martyrdom: there have been too many martyrs to her cause. I always thought that was so cleaver but now wonder if he may have been reading a bit of Alice Walker and was inspired.Though Alice Walker has worked in a variety of genres, including children’s literature, poetry, nonfiction, and screenwriting, she is best known for her novels, which give voice to the concerns of an often doubly oppressed group: African American women.

And there is the history of the women her mother came from: a great-great-grandmother who, as a slave, repeatedly stole back her children each time they were sold away from her, and who, when finally allowed to keep them, starved to death trying to feed them; a great-grandmother, also a slave, who painted faces on barns across Georgia; Meridian’s grandmother, who killed herself working to get her daughter through school; and her mother herself, who got through school and helped four of her brothers and sisters do the same.Meridian's life is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of love and forgiveness, and the ability to become the best version of ourselves. Truman eventually sours to the movement, having lost sight of its intentions in his self-absorption.Meridian is in some respects autobiographical, but Walker and Meridian Hill, the novel’s protagonist, differ in many significant ways. This book is almost a reflective look at its history, humble beginnings, the height and what became of it. This is a coming of age story for Meridian, who gradually becomes aware of the civil rights movement around her and starts hanging out with activists persuading blacks to register and to vote. Could it not also have sparked some hope and hinted at goodness and the human potential to overcome differences between races, cultures and genders fostered with common ideals and objectives?

Walker wrote the novel at a time when many young black people were shifting away from supporting the practice of nonviolence and civil disobedience that had characterized the early years of the movement and had begun to take on more militant and extreme positions thereby alienating some supporters. I generally love books like this but I feel like this was an example of no cohesiveness and poor character and plot development. Meridian is about Meridian Hill, a young black woman in the late 1960s who is attending college as she embraces the civil rights movement at a time when the movement becomes violent. Perjuangannya bukan hal yang gampang, karena ternyata tantangan itu bukan hanya datang dari perlakuan kaum kulit putih yang diskriminan (which is always beautifully written by Alice), tapi dari para kulit hitam sendiri.

Charting the story of the civil rights movement through one woman's struggle, Meridian is a powerful meditation on community, womanhood and self-discovery from the Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Color Purple . However, this is a story of a powerful story of race in America made very personal -- similar to my novel and different. The sickness renders her unconscious, episodes she refers to as “falling down,” and it subjects her to paralysis, blindness, and hair loss. Life starts out hard - at seventeen, she finds herself married with a child and denied an education because of it. Although this chat focuses on The Color Purple, Walker discusses many biographical details that might interest readers of Meridian.
