Sir John William Frederic Nott KCB [1] (born 1 February 1932 in Bideford, Devon) is a former British Conservative Party politician prominent in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their daughter, Sasha, is a journalist married to the former MP for East Devon, Hugo Swire, Baron Swire, and published controversial diaries about life as a parliamentarian's wife in the early 21st century. Nott died at Bristol in 1825, aged seventy-four, and was interred in the old burial-ground at Clifton. John Nott’s career in politics and business has given him a unique perspective on some of the key events in British public life during the latter part of the twentieth century and on the revolution which has taken place in the affairs of the City of London.

Nott offered his resignation to Margaret Thatcher the invasion but unlike, Lord Carrington, he was persuaded to stay on for the duration of the conflict. In 1968, he was one of the few MPs to vote against the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968, thinking it "disgraceful that people who had British passports should have them taken away".

Nott served in the early 1970s government of Prime Minister Ted Heath as a junior Treasury minister. He was eventually replaced by Michael Heseltine in January 1983 when Nott announced he would not seek re-election in 1983. Before going to university, Nott served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles during the Malayan emergency, (1952-56). He then went up to Trinity College from 1957 to 1959 to read Law and Economics and was also President of the Cambridge Union in his final year.In his short time at the MoD he had instituted savage cuts on the military in general and the Royal Navy in particular.

His review of the Royal Navy leaving the door open to the Argentine Junta whom it was known were unpredictable, in a financial/domestic mess and with a prediliction for claiming the Falklands through force.
