I discussed the history of the game, its worldwide popularity, the art, and why the game is one of the best activities people can do to exercise their brains. In connection with the book, I have given over 100 talks about Mahjong art and the history of the game. It remains to be a game unlike any other in the world both in its underlying concepts and its rich cultural significance.

Turning off the personalized advertising setting won’t stop you from seeing Etsy ads, but it may make the ads you see less relevant or more repetitive. Anyone who has ever been intrigued by a Mahjong tile will find in these pages visually stunning photographs that will entice them into becoming an enthusiast of the timeless game of Mahjong. With five different kinds of tiles that make this up, there are three suits: dots, bamboo and characters; honour tiles engraved with the Chinese character for north, south, east, west and more; and the beautiful bonus tiles decorated in three alternating colours and featuring illustrations of local foliage and pictorial visualisations of the four seasons.

Ricky looks back on a time when the industry boomed, expressing the beauty of the artistry and its intrinsic ties to Hong Kong culture. Not only did mahjong tables line the metropolitan streets under cricket-chirping trees, but it was also played at weddings, banquets, family gatherings and traditional holidays (especially the Lunar New Year) in its heyday. Choose from different variants to either give yourself a challenge or for a more casual and relaxing mahjong experience. China Institute sponsored me to give a talk about the Chinese Tradition of Mahjong, and at the end Melissa Martens Yaverbaum, curator of Project Mah Jongg, and I chatted about the game.

She loves Mah Jongg because it allows her to socialize with close friends while playing with beautiful tiles. As part of its effort to perpetuate local culture, Temple Mall invites all to head on a cultural journey with The Art of the Game: Behind Mah-jong Tiles, a campaign jointly organised with The Art of Mah-jong Craft, a studio founded by Ricky Cheung Sing-chung, one of Hong Kong’s last mahjong craftsmen, and his daughter Karen Aruba, who is an illustrator. Gregg Swain grew up, and continues to live, in New York City, where she developed her love and knowledge of art. With hundreds of beautiful new images by renowned photographer Michel Arnaud, and including historical documentation and ephemera, Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game fills the void between the past's and today's game, providing vision, inspiration and resources. It explains how two forces that appear wholly incompatible on one hand, like black and white, can in fact be interconnected in the natural world.Slowly, they started to collect their own Mah Jongg sets, and as their collections grew, so did their appreciation of the history of, and interest in, the game. Etsy’s 100% renewable electricity commitment includes the electricity used by the data centers that host Etsy. Published on the occasion of the North American premiere of Mahjong, a landmark exhibition of contemporary Chinese art from the world-renowned collection of the Swiss businessman and diplomat Uli Sigg, this catalogue accesses recent Chinese history through the lens of its art and the keen eye of an observant collector. The program features many challenging levels and Mahjongg boards that, once unlocked, reveal beautiful backgrounds.
