You may find that you prefer different hook styles for different project types, fibres and yarn weights. If you like this style of hook (closer to a Boye hook) you shouldn’t have a problem with that though. The large grip especially helped reduce my hand pain so I could crochet for much longer, but I also liked the familiarity of the shape of the smaller grip. In fact most retailers like Spotlight or Lincraft only sell Boye hooks so it seems like we’re a nation of default tapered hook users. You can see tiny imperfections where little bits of silicone are poking up, but honestly they don’t effect the feel of the hook in your hand.

For my small hooks, I wrap duct tape around the handles so they fit snuggly in the hole without slipping. There are two main ways of holding a crochet hook and choosing the right one for you can make a world of difference in both comfort and precision. The only truly suitable hook for pencil grippers is a perfectly cylindrical handle placed not too far from the business end of the hook. Depending on your comfort, you can switch between knife grip or pencil grip to achieve the desired tension and control. The precise engineering of every hook ensures a smooth, straight shaft that produces an even tension, while the soft, rubber handle provides excellent grip with little strength needed, avoiding cramped hands and tight stitches so you can concentrate on getting your projects finished faster. No, left-handed crocheters can use exactly the same crochet hook grips as right-handed crocheters, including both the knife grip and pencil grip. William offers 2 different styles of hook grips (one large and one small) that each come in the above sizes to fit various hooks. I’m the crocheter that uses the same 3 hooks despite owning like 30, so I my Chunky Boy will be permanently affixed to my much-loved 3. Normally I can only crochet for about an hour max before having to take a break, but before I knew it I was finishing the body up and the next morning I worked up the rest of the pieces.

I have a nostalgic soft spot for Clover Amour as my first ever set of ergonomic crochet hooks was a set of Clover Amours. Having the beginnings of arthritis, I needed some comfort and tried Tulip Etimo first because I saw a video of a pencil hold crocheter using one and thought I can use that. I removed the silicone grips from my whole set of Clovers in favor of using them with the ChunkyBoy. He just got some 5/8 inch doweling, cut into 4 inch pieces and drilled down into the end with drill bits that match whatever size hook I am using.

So whilst I suggest trying different things, or substituting different hook styles willy nilly, I appreciate this may not be feasible for all. It was only last year I tried the clover soft touch for the first time (this one has a flat handle so is quite different from what I’m used to), but I really enjoyed working with it. However, that’s just my experience and I actually think this grip would be great if you hold your hook like a pencil.

You may find you get a different result if you used the comfort cushion with a Bates hook, or with smaller diameter hooks. However, the combination of narrow shaft and very pointy tip of the hook meant that the tip would split my yarn every time I tried to draw back up through a loop. Always choose the grip method that best suits your needs for a specific project and stick with that grip for the whole project. I’m a knife grip crocheter and found it fine to use the Addi Swing but I’m pretty sure a pen grip crocheter would struggle – they look to me like they’re designed for knife grippers. However, the smaller grip is about the size of the handle of my favorite handmade hook (from Love Stitches All), so I had to put them both to the test to see which one I preferred.I honestly don’t think you need to stress out over what kind of hook person you are – if you like both, use both. By finding the best technique for you, you can avoid hand strain and work more efficiently, allowing your projects to come together smoothly and effortlessly.
