For starters, the first half of the name, “Jesus”, is a clear reference to the religious figure of Jesus Christ. This reference is especially significant given the character’s role as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those around him. Just as Jesus Christ is seen as a savior and a source of guidance for many, Jesus Shuttlesworth is seen as a source of hope and inspiration for his team, his family, and his community. He also was not born with specialized skills in his human knowledge involving carpentry, basketball, playing the piano, or other activities. Jake, on the other hand, has experienced a transformation of his own. Shown in the stark difference of his treatment between his wife and Dakota Burns, a prostitute whom he befriends and treats nicely. His sense of responsibility was also tested because when his mom died, and his father was behind bars, he had to take care of his little sister. He essentially skipped the formative years of young adulthood to become both a big brother and a parent to his sister. Jesus may have had a great deal of natural aptitude, but that wouldn’t mean he had every conceivable advantage.

Spike Lee’s depiction of women almost always leaves feminists with something to be angry about. This movie is not the one to save Lee for the feminists. For one, Martha Shuttlesworth seemed like a helpless housewife in the movie. She’s a stereotypical doting mother who shouts out from the apartment building window to Jesus in the basketball court when it’s time for supper. She’s a generally submissive wife who, in domestic squabbles, get the brunt of a violent exchange with her husband. Her submissiveness ultimately led her to her death.A person who always got up when he intended wouldn’t be noticed, though people may have simply thought such a person was “an early riser” (cf. Mark 1:35). Despite these challenges, Jesus Shuttlesworth is not just a passive victim of circumstance. He is a talented and driven young man who is determined to make his own way in the world, and this drive and ambition is what makes him such a compelling character. But how many of these Christians playing sport are Christians in sport? In other words how many Christians don’t just play sport but actually see that their sport and faith are integrated? Not separate areas - “I go to church on Sunday and play sport during the week” - but integrated - “I play sport as part of a whole life view of worship”. Chad’s #1: Basketball was an access point into American culture for relegated Catholic and Jewish Americans in the early 20th century.

From the start, it was clear that Ray Allen was up for the challenge. In the film, he brought a quiet intensity to the role of Jesus Shuttlesworth, capturing the character’s talent, drive, and vulnerability in a way that was both convincing and compelling.

Because he was always dribbling. The history of the NBA almost went in an entirely different direction. Had Kobe accepted the role, maybe Ray Allen wouldn’t have gone on to make more three-pointers than anyone else in NBA history!! Was Jesus Shuttlesworth a real person? Spurs Jesus: I would say Jesus being a man of many miracles and talents could probably do some amazing things on a basketball court if He so pleases. Also, I don’t know if He can walk on air—He can walk on water—but I’m sure He probably could throw down a nasty dunk or two if He felt like it.
