Continue using the same number of pieces of gum or lozenge and reduce to the Step 2 patch for 3-4 weeks. Then use the Step 3 patch for 3-4 weeks. When the patch is no longer needed gradually reduce the number of pieces of gum or lozenge until you no longer need them. To help cut down or quit smoking you should also try to use a behavioural support programme to increase your chances of success. How does Nicotinell Gum help stop smoking? Nicotinell gums can cause adverse reactions similar to those associated with nicotine administered by other means (including smoking) These can be attributed to the pharmacological effects of nicotine, which are dose dependant. Non dose-dependent adverse reactions are as follows: Nicotine is excreted in breast milk. Nicotine replacement therapy should therefore be avoided during breast-feeding. Should smoking withdrawal not be achieved, oral forms of nicotine replacement therapy gum may be considered as intermittent dose forms would minimize the amount of nicotine in breast milk and permit feeding when levels were at their lowest. When you are down to 1 - 2 pieces per day, you can stop using Nicotinell Gum. This should be possible within 6 months from the start of treatment.

Even small quantities of nicotine are dangerous in children, and may result in severe symptoms of poisoning which may prove fatal. If poisoning is suspected in a child, a doctor must be consulted immediately. Asymptomatic patients who have ingested more than 0.2mg/kg of nicotine should be observed for at least 4 hours. However, if other cardiac/cardiotoxic agents have been taken monitor for the longest period recommended for these. Good neurological outcome after cardiac arrest (due to nicotine poisoning) may occur after prolonged resuscitation. Cardiac arrest in hospital or witnessed out of hospital, with bystander CPR, should be continued for at least 1 hour (discuss with local poisons centre)For a number of years you will have become accustomed to smoking at certain times, with particular people or in certain situations. Think about the times you will miss smoking the most and plan how you will cope on these occasions. Chronic smokers can tolerate doses of nicotine that, in a non-smoker, would be more toxic, because of the development of tolerance. Concomitant use of acidic beverages such as coffee or soda may decrease the buccal absorption of nicotine. Acidic beverages should be avoided for 15 minutes prior to chewing the gum. One piece of Nicotinell gum to be chewed when the user feels the urge to smoke. Do not use more than 1 gum per hour. Normally, 8-12 pieces per day can be used, up to a maximum of 24 pieces per day. Do not use more than 1 gum per hour.

How does Nicotinell Gum help stop smoking?

Nicotinell Fruit flavoured gum provides an effective aid to combat the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms caused by giving up smoking. Nicotinell 2mg gum is particularly useful for moderate smokers experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms.

The benefits of gastric decontamination are uncertain. Consider activated charcoal (50g adults: 1g/kg children) provided airway can be protected in those presenting within 1 hour of ingestion of more than 0.2mg/kg of nicotine. Authority to prescribe an Authority medicine is granted for specific indications and/or for certain patient circumstances. Authority may be obtained by telephone to Medicare Australia (known as "phone approval") or in writing from an authorised delegate of the Minister for Health. Most of the side effects which are reported by patients occur generally during the first 3-4 weeks after initiation of therapy. The Nicotinell product range: Includes TTS Patch, medicated chewing gum and lozenge. Stop smoking aid. Requires willpower. Contains nicotine. Always read the label. Encourage a friend or family member to quit with you. It will give your morale a boost since there will be another person knowing exactly what you’re feeling and with whom you can share your resolve to quit smoking. Remove any temptation

Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number). The chewing action also works to distract you from your desire to smoke, giving your mouth something else to do (other than smoking). Which strength: If you smoke less than 20 cigarettes per day, consider Nicotinell 2 mg medicated gum; smokers of more than 20 cigarettes per day should consider Nicotinell 4 mg medicated gumWhen you have cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke to a level you feel you can quit completely, follow Program A above. Overdose with Nicotinell gum may only occur if many pieces are chewed simultaneously. Nicotine toxicity after ingestion will most likely be minimized as a result of early nausea and vomiting that occur following excessive nicotine exposure. Risk of poisoning by swallowing the gum is small. Since the release of nicotine from the gum is slow, very little nicotine is absorbed from the stomach and intestine, and if any is, it will be inactivated in the liver.
