Pick up all of the newly released Defenders of the Realm items including the long awaited reprint of the Quest of the Realm Deck! Meanwhile, Hayley, a fellow twelve-year-old, discovers a piece of the Black Dragon's tail at the Tower of London. Add to that the contrasting personalities of Brian and LC and you have scenarios and dialogue that are both funny and moving. It`s about Alfie, heir to the throne, as he assumes his new role and discovers he must also become a superhero/vigilante figure known as the Defender, who deals with the mythical creatures that have caused all of the disasters in British history.

It’s a big enough issue for some schools to have a “Failure Week”, where pupils are encouraged to take a risk and try out new sports, subjects and hobbies, even if it means they might fail at the first attempt. And it’s all interlinked, without the failures you don’t learn anything so you’ll never progress to the successes. The boxy design of the original Defender has circumnavigated the world with iconic shots of the Defender everywhere you can possibly go on the planet. The story is up to date with its technology – news spreads via social media, and kids are ahead of adults in communication and gadgetry. You aren’t sitting at an odd angle where your elbow is always poking out of the window when you turn the steering wheel, and it is furnished with all the modern comforts. The British Royal family has diverged from real life here and we find ourselves seeing the world from the heir, 14 year old Prince Alfie's point of view.

I ended up getting really into it, and look forward to the club's selections bolstering my annual book count. Héritier du trône d'Angleterre, Alfie grandit sous les objectifs des photographes qui épinglent ses moindres faits et gestes. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about the original Land Rover Defender is British engineering and the new Defender is no different. Alfie is trying to save the Kingdom by night, rule it by day and keep his family together, all the while knowing if he fails, we could be thrown into another dark age. I have always loved the real Alfred the Great, and so this young new Alfred II wass quite interesting to me.I loved the way even though the characters are fictional I felt like I was taking a sneaky peak behind the scenes of the actual royal family. This is not a bad read, barring my inability to really tell whether this is YA or middle grade, the two occasionally overlap and this feels like a good transition point from one to the other. And for those of you who’ve read the first book, you’ll know that in Defender of the Realm: Dark Age, there’s going to be something else that will test Alfie’s resilience to the limit.

Were it used more frequently, I may have struggled with it, but each time the shift happened it felt purposeful and I enjoyed the development that came out of it. She gets caught up in the adventure when she takes her grandmother on a trip to see the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London. Alfie’s life changes in a moment, and it turns out there is more to being a Royal than waving to the camera. As far as storytelling goes, this was supposed to be a YA book, but ended up reading more like a middle grade story. This is a fast-paced, inventive and highly entertaining book which will appeal to boys and girls age 10 up, which is quite an achievement! Featuring a legendary superhero, a reluctant teen monarch and a secret centuries-long battle; Defender of the Realm is an epic, action-packed, adventure of a novel from debut authors Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler. From the chequered plate in the boot and all the added accessories you can play with online on the configurator, including the adventure pack, the country pack and the urban pack, it really harks back to personalisation and how the Defender and old series I, II and III became such an iconic part of the pan-global landscape. To make it worse, I think there is little motivation involved when he decides to become The Defender aside from duties.
