Description

Some of the popularity for the 'One for Sorrow' nursery rhyme can be attributed to the popular children's TV show Magpie, which was on the air from 1978 to 1980. Although it shares similarities at the start, the magpie tv theme has the tenth line, 'You must not miss', which refers to not miss the next episode of the series. The best antidote to swooping is friendship. Magpies have excellent memories and can recognise individual faces. So if you frequent an area enough, they mayrecognise you as the friendly neighbourhood human and won’t swoop. We both wanted to read this book as we have followed Zoe on her socials for a really long time. Also Im a big lover of YA novels especially crime novels.

Audrey ( Zoe) and Ivy ( Amy) do not get off to the best start and can’t stand each other, but as they’re drawn deeper into the mystery of the terrible murder they find that there is something dangerous at the heart of the school. For years, Magpie Mine was troubled by disputes with the neighbouring mines over who had the right to work each vein. Miners from Magpie Mine and Maypitt Mine were both working the Great Redsoil Vein, and would light fires underground to smoke each other out. The arguments raged for years, both underground and in the courts. In 1833, three Maypitt miners were suffocated by fumes from fires lit by Magpie miners, and 24 Magpie miners were put on trial for their murder. Several were freed immediately, and eventually all were acquitted because of the difficulty in identifying the individual culprits– as well asthe provocative actions of the Maypitt miners themselves. It is said that the wives of the “murdered” men put a curse on the mine, and the effect of the disputes was to ruin the mine, which closed in 1835. The Magpie Society: Two for Joy is a fun but ultimately messy sequel that doesn’t quite follow through on what it sets up. A Clumsy Sequel Inventory of the Thomas W. Sefton Laurel and Hardy Collection". OAC – Online Archive of California . Retrieved 28 September 2022. OCLC 874031253. As mentioned, the book is told through alternating POV chapters, something I’ve always enjoyed in stories. To me, the characters’ voices felt distinct enough to keep the chapters interesting and made the double POV a choice that paid off. There was plenty of opportunity to relay different experiences and information to the reader and I felt the authors made good use of the POVs. Overall…The Water Rats originally held meetings in Sunbury-on-Thames in a public house called The Magpie. Their headquarters is now at The Water Rats pub in Gray's Inn Road in Kings Cross, London. Its non stop twists and turns. Some of them don’t make that much sense and it is full of teen drama. Its definitely aimed at 13-17 year olds although they try to be creative with the wording it’s still for a younger audience.

Admittedly, I have a complicated relationship with these books because they’re very fun… but also so chaotic! To me, the reading experience is kind of like watching a shitty movie. I’m along for the ride and am equally annoyed and entertained by the inconsistencies.
