Description

A rudder command dictates changing the angle of the rudder, which is a single-event action, whereas steering a heading is a comparatively long event and will require ongoing or continuous rudder adjustments. What we were getting from this author was a light hearted surface and an invitation to look beyond this into the reality of life for the depressed mother and her three children. Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. The story is told by her daughter Lizzie , she is a comical little girl of 9 and is the middle child.

Man at the Helm by Nina Stibbe review – a family in crisis

A computer application records training sessions, complete with voice commands issued by the instructor which are received by the students via a headset. Readers will relish following the puzzle of this unpromising daughter of the sun god Helios and his wife, Perse, who had negligible use for their child. This lonely, scorned figure learns herbs and potions, surrounds herself with lions, and, in a heart-stopping chapter, outwits the monster Scylla to propel Daedalus and his boat to safety. I very much enjoyed Stibbe's Love, Nina when I read it last year, but ultimately found Man at the Helm rather disappointing. This novel, as with her previous work, is easy to read and explores numerous characters, mainly through the eyes of the children of the piece, which gives it a simplistic quality but not to the detriment of either the story or the style in which it is written, nor does it treat the reader as "simplistic", quite the opposite in fact.

There are plenty of hilarious incidents and misunderstandings (as well as some rather darker ones which manage to avoid sentimentalism), but the book does feel a little episodic. The thing I found most disturbing was the casual cruelty of the characters, and the neglect shown the children by both parents for the majority of the book.

Man at the Helm by Nina Stibbe | Goodreads

The extraordinary luck for Stibbe's publisher and readers is that Man at the Helm is a winner – a brilliant find.

When Penguin announced they were bringing out Stibbe's semi-autobiographical first novel, which had been languishing with the letters (and was written, years ago, on an autobiography and fiction course), it was hard to believe it would be any good. I raised my voice not much above a whisper, and, noiselessly, an un- complaining spirit in a fever-wasted body appeared in the light aft, the head with hollow eyes illumi- nated against the blackness which had swallowed up our world--and the universe. The village didn’t ‘come alive’ for me and I couldn’t really picture in my head any of the conversations the characters were having. Whether it's the big vs little sister dynamic, or the brutal disappointment of love gone wrong, Stibble does a great job of writing honestly and with a lot of humor.

BBC Radio 4 - Man at the Helm

at the ˈhelm/ˈtiller in control of an organization, etc: The company began to make profits again with the new managing director at the helm. It just doesn't have anything spectacular going on, it's paced quite slow and that does not alter at all and after a while it's a bit like the same story on repeat. Set in a small Leicestershire village in the 1970s, this four-part comedy drama is about the madcap schemes of three children to cheer up their recently divorced mum, Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Viann’s journey from passive to active resistance is less dramatic but no less wrenching.

Moreover, a rudder angle indicator that responds appropriately to the helm is part of the configuration. Although narrated by the adult Lizzie, the voice is still that of a nine-year-old and there gives emotional tug and pull between what a child sees and feels and what the wisdom and hindsight of adulthood give.
