Description

Unpainted metal Use a metal or all-purpose primer followed by gloss, eggshell or emulsion paint. Use an oil-based undercoat under oil-based paints. All you require is a smoothing knife and a tub of filler and you can get to work. I have included our choice of filler below. Now you need to seal the plywood with a primer. You will need a 2–inch paint brush and a roller. A mini roller (4-inch) is ideal for edges and smaller areas. Use a bigger 9–inch roller for larger areas. With an interior wall filler, there are a number of things you are looking for. It ideally must be fast drying, easy to sand down and not require any priming as the last thing you want is to have to spot prime a single part of the wall where you have filled. There are a number of excellent options, but a popular one is by high quality decorating sundries manufacturer Toupret, who have a classic interior filler that is ideal for use on interior walls. This is an extremely versatile filler that can be used on unpainted or painted surfaces such as plaster & only requires one coat filling.

Like water-borne primer, solvent-borne primer can be used on interior and exterior surfaces, including woodwork, cement, and building boards. This primer can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray. As solvent-borne primer is oil-based, you will need to clean your equipment with white spirit or brush cleaner. It will need to be built up in layers, for the best results. Leaving 6 hours for the filler to dry between each layer. The filler will need to be spread over the Artex with a wide jointing/smoothing knife or equivalent. The kit below provides all the tools you will need to apply and smooth off the filler. Think about using a mini 4-inch roller to do the edges, a foam roller will give an almost smooth finish. Don’t forget you’ll need to know how to clean paint rollers to keep them in tip top condition and ready for the next job. Universal wood/metal primers can be used on new wood, masonry, metal, and plaster, inside and outside. Apply with a brush and clean with white spirit afterwards. Primers for Plaster It’s imperative to use a primer on bare plaster. This image shows what happens if you paint straight onto bare plaster without priming with a mist coat first.

New Plaster and very porous or powdery surfaces should be primed first with filler coat diluted 1 part to 4 parts water and allow to dry. It may require a little bit more elbow grease on your part, but you should be able to get the job done! This is usually caused by contamination of the underlying surface by soluble stains. Putting it rightMDF Unpainted MDF needs sealing before painting. Use a specialist sealant such as Johnstone's MDF primer followed by an undercoat, before glossing or eggshelling.

Start by filling any dents, imperfections, knot holes and nail and screw holes with a decent wood filler such as Everbuild Multi-Purpose Wood Filler. If the edges are going to be seen, paint the edges, fill and rub down. Aluminium wood primer is used on softwoods and on surfaces that have been previously treated with wood preservative. Apply with a brush and clean your equipment with white spirit. If you want colour make sure to prime and undercoat properly and use the best exterior wood paint to give a good finish. Expect to repaint every three to five years. What is the Best Way To Paint Plywood Edges? As long as the stain isn’t of the penetrating type, as a water or nicotine stain is, then they will cover it. When the surface is thoroughly dry the affected surface will need to be rubbed down using 'wet and dry' abrasive paper. It can then be re-coated. This should only be done once the conditions improve or when the condensation problem is resolved.

A mist coat is a water-borne primer. You can make up a mist coat by adding water to an emulsion paint (follow manufacturer’s guidance on mixing your paint). The difference between a mist coat and primer is that a mist coat should only be used on new plaster. For priming other surfaces such as wood and metal, a wood or metal specific primer should be used. What Is the Difference Between Primer and Undercoat? Primer paint is the first layer of paint you will apply to your surface. If you are painting wood or metal, you will have already prepared your surface by sanding and descaling etc. Primer paint should be the first stage of your coating and paint system.

There are a couple of options for getting the best looking edges. Rub down with a fine 120 grit sandpaper, add a coat of primer and leave to dry. Now apply a thin layer of wood filler and leave to dry. Rub down again with fine grit sandpaper and add an undercoat. You might need to do two.Open joints are common when wood butted together during construction dries out and shrinks away. Fill the gaps with a wood filler and sand down with a fine abrasive, then use a primer over the surface. Primer paint and undercoat may seem similar and, whilst there are some crossovers, they serve different purposes.
