Description

Nimona is the New York Times bestselling graphic novel sensation from Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic. Kirkus says, “If you’re going to read one graphic novel this year, make it this one.” And it was, effective, that is. Because Nimona is a different story for everyone, it acts as a shapeshifting device itself. Because the story can shape shift its meaning for different people. That's the great thing about comics or graphic novels. You aren't just working on words. You are working with elements of art too. Stevenson’s insistence that Nimona remain recognizable in the movie extended to aspects of her character design, color scheme, and movement. “One of the things that was really important to me was her body type,” he said. “She’s chubby and she’s curvy, but she’s never sexualized, and she’s gender-nonconforming. She just has her own unique style. She chooses to look this way. And so that was something I just really wanted to make sure — no matter how much [the story] might change in the adaption, that that was something that stayed true.” STEVENSON: Yeah. I mean, it's been just a truly wild ride for me. Even the graphic novel being adapted from the webcomic - you know, I really assumed that it would have a much smaller audience. And that's when I started realizing that these characters in this world were kind of taking on a life of their own, and they were starting to evolve. And that was also the experience of making this movie, and it was certainly a very tumultuous journey getting there. There was, you know, a very real time where it didn't seem like it was going to happen at all. Stevenson began working on Nimona while attending the Maryland Institute College of Art, revisiting a character he had created in high school. Stevenson published Nimona as a webcomic from 2012 through 2014, initially through Tumblr, developing the story and the art style as time progressed. The finished work ultimately doubled as his senior thesis. After an agent reached out to Stevenson, HarperCollins released Nimona in print form in 2015. It has been translated into at least 16 other languages and adapted into an audiobook.

DETROW: Qualifications - she can turn into anything and anybody she wants to. And it comes at handy when she teams up with Boldheart to figure out who exactly killed the queen. The movie is based on a graphic novel by N.D. Stevenson, and N.D. joins us now to talk about it. Welcome to ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. Stevenson's Nimona's version of the Institution For Law Enforcement And Heroics is as shady as it is shiny. Like its animated counterpart, it invokes Gloreth's name but it's almost forgotten about Nimona's battle with its founder. Gloreth's role in its history is unclear but there's a chance that the mythical hero was actually replaced by Nimona and that Nimona helped found this version of the Institution. DETROW: I want to talk about the relationship between two characters, Ballister Boldheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin. And by the way, Ambrosius Goldenloin - one of the best names I have ever come across. It is such a fun name to say.

In the movie, his arm is severed during the knighting ceremony. Bowed before the queen, he readies for her blessing. Then, his sword — which shoots lasers, because Nimona is set in a world where medieval fantasy and sci-fi tech collide — goes off and kills her. In a hasty and futile attempt to save the queen, Ambrosius (voiced by Eugene Lee Yang) tries to disarm the threat and dis-arms Ballister. Both know it was his training and not a choice, but that doesn't make it sting any less. Just like that, Ballister goes from the kingdom's great new hope to a notorious queen-killer, on the run and desperate to clear his name. All in all, this was a super-fast read but it was TOTALLY worth it! “Aw yeah, let's make some evil plans!”

As a reader, I’m thankful that new media allows for so many ways for stories like this to be told and distributed, and for talented storytellers like Stevenson to find an audience. This cinnamon roll needed a section to himself, because I have never seen a villain so pure and so hero-like. As mentioned above, Nimona is an adaptation of ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, which was published as a webcomic from 2012 and then finally released as a graphic novel book in 2015. But there’s still that lingering feeling that fans of a book almost always get when they see it adapted for TV or film. Whether the screen version is well made or not, regardless of whether it stands on its own and finds its own audience, there’s often still that forlorn little inner voice whispering, But you aren’t actually telling the story that drew people to this title in the first place.
