Once the tissue paper is frayed, measure how far the tissue paper will reach down the headband and cut off any excess. Once your project has been cut. Flip the design over and under the headband. Line up your cut design in the middle of the headband. After everything is glued, fluff the fringes to help hide the tabs previously glue to hold the phrase on the headband. This set includes the front hat (it says Happy New Year 2021 on it), and 4 strips. The strips are what make the hat capable of staying on kids’ heads. There are four, so you can make it as little or as big as you need.

Use the cut tabs at the bottom of the design to fold up and over the headband to help attach the phrase to the headband. Be sure to leave about half an inch to an inch for the frayed tissue paper. Open the tissue paper channel created for the headband. Hot glue to the bottom, the underside of the headband.

Lay the hat front face down on the table. Take the straps and place them face down also. Bring them to the side of the hat and tape on. This is optional, but I turned the hat face up and taped the sides too so that the strips were very secure. This is perfect for New Year’s Day or New Year’s Eve! You can do this at home, at school or in Sunday school. Kids will love personalizing their own hat!!

You may want to put a bit of glue behind the letters as well to help keep them in place. Take scissors, and while the tissue paper is folded, begin to fray the tissue paper half down the open or non-folded side. Next, cut a sheet of tissue paper in half. Fold that in half once more, then again. You will have a long sheet of tissue paper creating a “V” channel for your headband to eventually sit inside.

I waited to cut the hat out until my daughter colored hers. I felt like it was easier for her to color it as a full sheet, versus the smaller pieces. Once it is colored how your child wants it, the next step is cutting each piece out.
