On the one hand you have a simple, affordable meal that you know that you’re going to enjoy. On the other you could splash out a little bit more for a lot of extra dishes. Some of these are going to enhance your meal, whilst others might leave you feeling bloated and maybe even a little queasy. The remaining building tiles from the building market are given to the players who have the most money of the respective currency in their hand (it does not matter how much the building costs).

Personally, there are certain modules that I would always include like Change and The Workers Huts. These are easy to understand, simple to set-up and don’t really impact on game length. On top of these, it’s probably worth adding a further three or four modules. Any more than that and the game becomes over-complicated and unwieldy. The Diamonds introduces a new currency into the game: diamonds. Diamonds may be used in place of any currency when buying tiles but may not be combined with other currencies when doing so. The new Score Cards changes the relative score values of the six basic types of buildings in each of the three scoring phases. This is where having those walled tiles comes in, because players receive extra points for every connected walled tile (emphasis on the connected, it helps to bridge those gaps). Closing Thoughts on Alhambra Troisdorf (2005) is a limited, re-themed edition of Alhambra, with identical rules, set in and only sold in Troisdorf, the town in which Queen Games is based. Each new tile must be joined to your Alhambra by at least one side (i.e. it cannot be joined just at a corner). The rest of the money cards are divided into five roughly equal piles. Put the "1st Scoring Round" card into the second pile and the "2nd Scoring Round" card into the fourth. You get the original Alhambra plus five expansions, each of which has four different modules. So that’s a light to medium weight game plus twenty extra modules.

There are 3 scoring rounds during the game. The first two take place when the scoring cards are drawn from the pile of money cards. The third and final scoring round takes place at the end of the game. Final Score: 3.5 Stars – A decent tile-laying game that will appeal to both newcomers to the hobby and hardcore gamers looking for lighter fare. Alhambra is a game that requires judgement and skill in timing. It’s not just about gathering money but knowing when to buy a tile and when to wait for a better one to turn up. Designing your Alhambra is also fun, knowing where to place the tiles so you can acquire the most points from your wall. Visually it is very appealing, as the different coloured tiles combine to make each individual Alhambra a thing of beauty, and if you manage to build a long extending wall it’s extremely satisfying. The Bonus Cards introduces cards which are given out to each player at the start of the game. The cards grant its player a bonus if they possess the tile on the card in their Alhambra. In each scoring round, points are awarded to whoever has the most of each kind of building. Players are also given points for the length of the wall around their Alhambras. Points for having the most of each kind of building Points are awarded for having the highest number of one of the different kinds of buildings. The number of points a player receives depends on which kind of building it is. For anyone unfamiliar with Alhambra, it’s a tile-laying game where the goal is to build the best possible walled city by purchasing buildings using four different currencies.

The promotional expansion/module "The Magic Buildings" was also released. It adds 6 magic building tiles to the game. When drawn, these tiles can be placed to score extra points depending on their surrounding tiles. The promotional expansion/module "The Medina Buildings" adds 9 Medina building tiles to the game. During the scoring rounds, they award "negative" points to the player with the fewest of these tiles in his/her Alhambra.A player can buy a building tile from the building market. He must pay at least the price shown on the tile and use the currency displayed next to the tile in the building market. Undoubtedly the Special does represent excellent value for money. But, if you don’t actually eat or enjoy it all, does it justify the extra cost? If you don’t already own Alhambra, then you should definitely invest in the Big Box version rather than the core game. It does cost a little more, but it’s going to provide you with a lot more variety and replayability over the years ahead. Players who have the most building tiles of each kind in their Alhambra at the right time (in the three scoring rounds) are awarded points - the exact amount depending on the type of building. Players also receive points each round for the longest continuous wall built around their Alhambra. Should you add this to your collection? Sure. Alhambra is a decent game for newcomers and casual gamers because of all the reasons listed above. If you find your game nights skew more towards Le Havre and Dungeon Lords, Alhambra may not necessarily be for you, but you may find it worthwhile to hold onto for nights when you have rookies and non-gamer family over.

The 3rd round of scoring takes place at the end of the game; points are then also awarded to the players with the third highest number of buildings of each kind as shown in the example and on the points table on the tile reserve board. Alhambra: The Dice Game ( Alhambra: Das Würfelspiel, 2006) is a die-rolling game, broadly similar in play to Yahtzee. The Worker's Hut introduces worker hut tiles. Worker hut tiles are free to take but count as a player's action. They score nothing if they are placed by themselves, but if adjacent to other tiles of the same colour, they count as 1 extra building of that colour for each they are adjacent to.You must be able to reach each new building tile "on foot" from the starting tile without crossing a wall and without going off the tiles.
