Ezra, the owner of The Atlantic, is Silver Johnny’s jealous and domineering manager. The play opens with an unseen meeting between Ezra and Sam about the future of Silver Johnny. Outside the meeting, Ezra’s two hired guns, Sweets and Potts, talk about what is going on in the meeting. They are high on amphetamines. Baby, Ezra’s abused, psychotic son, arrives with Skinny, another member of Ezra’s gang. Baby torments Skinny to keep himself amused. In 1997 a film adaptation was released of the stage play. It was also written and directed by Butterworth. The new cast members are united in their admiration of the writing. "It's been quite hard mastering those rhythms," says Grint. "There's lots of bouncing off one another, and it's so fast-paced and charged. But it's a lot of fun." Although never seen in the play, Ezra is the gang leader who owns The Atlantic and manages Silver Johnny. He is Baby's abusive father and is murdered by Ross in a power struggle over the business rights to Silver Johnny’s career. Baby Disconnected from the Mojo, the Poly is about the size of a typical vintage cigarette lighter. When the two are attached, their combined size is closer to that of a small hipflask. Langella storms on to the stage, where Robert Innes Hopkins's simple, strong design is dominated by a tarnished throne. This not a Lear who works up to his roars. He is from the beginning a wounded lion. So much so that you fear for his howls on the heath: will there be anything left after all this might? Langella impressively dredges up more desperation, but his compelling decline is essentially from authority rather than from sanity. In losing power he loses one sense of himself rather than all sense of himself. The exceptional lucidity of the production brings a limitation. The play is no longer an expression of madness, a thing made up of fragments, a disaster zone of terrible episodes. The wheeze is that Wooster has hired a theatre to stage memories of a weekend in Totleigh Towers that was jammed with squeaks so narrow and consequences so dire they "might have occurred to Ibsen in one of his less frivolous moments". Stephen Mangan makes the silly ass not too appealing and just this side of maddening, with braying laugh and goofy gait. Matthew Macfadyen's immaculate, gliding (but not glacial) Jeeves helps him to put some flesh on his anecdotes by wheeling on some cardboard sets. As Mangan's eyes spin, he explains: "It's called scenery. Quite widely used in the theatre." If you’re doing the latter, the Poly takes up the Mojo’s digital inputs – so you’ll have to unplug any connected sources while you stream. And you’ll also be a slave to the Poly’s claimed nine-hour battery life. The Chord Mojo’s is ten hours. While streaming over AirPlay and Bluetooth (from a combination of Apple’s iPad, Apple MacBook Air and the LG G6 smartphone) isn’t quite as precise, open or transparent, expectations are well met. Whishaw had played Skinny in a production of the play at Rada, and jumped at the chance to graduate to Baby. "I wanted to do it straight away," he says softly. "We're all still kind of figuring the play out really. Baby is damaged, but then I suppose they're all damaged men."

As the day wears on, people begin to gather outside the club waiting for the doors to open, oblivious to the situation. Sweating it out inside, the small group of four have to break the tragic news of Ezra's grisly death to Baby, who takes the news in a dreamlike, distant manner. Uneasy about Baby's mental stability, the Atlantic gang begins to become restless - especially about their catering. Arguments break out over frivolous matters (Skinny's Uncle Tommy), and the group finally settles to consider just what its rivals are doing at that very moment.Jez was 24 when he wrote it," exclaims Mays incredulously. "It's got that unapologetic rawness to it: it's someone pouring out their talent. It's fearless."
