Description

Just as, at Carhullan, all roles (hunting, gathering, talking, listening, defense, attack) are filled by women, Jackie taps into brutality and violence as a human trait rather than a masculine or feminine one.

A mixture of exhaustion and elation fills the narrator as she climbs the brant slopes towards Carhullan farm, but the welcome she receives is sterner than she had fondly imagined. This community at Carhullan is outside the confines of the official system and they are treated as ‘Unofficials’. After these encounters, Sister begins collecting information about Carhullan, and especially about its charismatic leader, Jackie Nixon, a mysterious ex-army officer. Sarah Hall is garnering a reputation as a strong regional voice with her flavoursome historical fiction .

The Carhullan Army, however, is the real thing: a hard book, unforgiving, surprising, and sometimes disturbing. User contributions are not fact checked and do not represent the official position of Historic England.

In Carhullan, preparing and daily work are ever-present and keep from over-glamorizing the dystopia. When the changes first came about, they were aligned in their views, and yet he has come to accept the status quo – something for which she can’t forgive him.INTERIOR: the six-bay north-west range has a replacement roof structure, and is a largely open space with a byre undercroft to either end. Attractions within close reach included Haweswater Reservoir, where you will find a number of walks, as well as Keld Chapel, a National Trust property. This building is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural or historic interest. The first third of the book deals with the narrator's Day One of her Year Zero when she makes the journey to Carhullen and the reception that she receives there. Home to William Golding, Sylvia Plath, Kazuo Ishiguro, Sally Rooney, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Max Porter, Ingrid Persaud, Anna Burns and Rachel Cusk, among many others, Faber is proud to publish some of the greatest novelists from the early twentieth century to today.
